I'm sure weve all heard about how reliable and not accurate they are, but just how true is this? Theres been a plethora of AKs that hadnt been cleaned in 10 years and its still shoots just fine. I wanted to see just how accurate these rifles truly were and exactly what they can withstand.
Accuracy The AK-47 is not the most accurate weapon when compared to other assault rifles, such as the M4(AR-15). The accuracy of the AK usually when taken out of the box is steady at 4 inch group. Though over time, changes in its accuracy begin to spread out to 5.8 inch group at 100 yards. This is more than likely due to poor maintenance. When compared to the accuracy of the M4, which can easily hold a 3 inch group at 100 yards.
The reason for the AKs lack of accuracy is due to its functioning and projectiles ballistic coefficient. The AK-47 is made up of only a few moving parts. There are fewer parts, these parts are made up of large chunks of metal. Take the bolt for example once fired. The hunk of metal that unlocks and flies back once fired is pretty heavy when compared to the M4.
As it rides the railing and slams to the back, the weapons harmonics are disturbed significantly, take a look at a few videos of the AK-47 fired in slow motion and see the amount of barrel whip. Read the rest of the AK47 accracy and reliability story here.
You and had the same experiences. - I had to run through a storm of fire to rescue a wounded man in the open and I made it with him all the way back to cover unscratched
Well, until a machine gun hit me while I was working on the wounded guy.
The Bulgarian stuff was good quality(circle 10).
East German Maks are great
Polish stuff (Circle 11) was high standard too
Romanian stuff is spotty
It was a bitch to clear
Same hold, squeezed off another, the puller found the hole and radioed back that it hit the Tee that was used to hold the disc in the original hole.
Full auto may hit with the first round, the rest go high.
semi is usually more the shooter than the rifle.
Yup - some of us carried assembled cleaning rods to ram down the barrel to try to knock the jammed cartridges out. Like a muzzle loader.
Its a lousy design for getting to the chamber - and it self-pollutes with its own gasses and debris.
“The thing about most of Ivans stuff was it was made so any potato farmer could operate it”
A few years ago a friend of mine who has an extensive high end gun collection decided to slum it and buy an AK variant. He called me because he couldn’t get the top cover back on. I told him to put the front in the groove in the reunion, line it up, then smack it like he was a drunken Russian peasant. I hear a metallic whack, laughter and then “It worked!”
Give it a whack!
BTW you don’t need the damn thing anyway! LOL
Years ago I passed by a Valmet AK in .243 on a milled receiver.
That was a good rifle.
I like that Israeli Galil too
I still have a stone and a pointy stick...
Doesn’t AK mean “Assault Kollusion”?
Years ago I passed up this SVT 40 because the serial #s did not match
Found out later the serial 3s never matched!
Aint seen an SVT 40 since then
The SVT 40 was s long fiddly high maintenance thing that was expensive to make, It was replaced in 1947, by the Cheap compact, works like a hose AK 47
Thanks for that info, it must have been a Bulgarian one he bought the second time.
Here are some pictures from a Russian police manual:
Lying position

Standing
Dreadful...
Just DREADFUL!
I would really like to see you get a762 NATO round completely chambered in a AK 47
Getting it to fire without blowing up on you would’ve a neat trick as well
I have a Bulgie Mak and love it. I carried it for years, without nary a hiccup.
For the AK round if I want an attempt at accuracy without spending a ton of money I would go for an SKS. You don’t get as many rounds but the ones I have shot have been more accurate than the AK’s. I personally prefer an M1 Garand or G3.
I Have A Bulgarian an East German and assorted other flavors
