There is a growing common belief that the 1st Amendment is subject to limitations aligning with the "correct" opinions and political affiliation.
The belief is " Since you have attacked me with your differing opinion I will physically attach you in self-defense and it is illegal for you to fight back."

If California is the future of American politics that may not please some on the left. California is far more inegalitarian and troubled than some red states.
