Feedback on the new shingles vaccine? I usually lie low on medical treatment and don't go for 'the latest' treatment on much of anything. But then, I am healthy. Any feedback about this new vaccine? Side-effects? Avoid it? Go for it? Just collecting data here, thanks.
I had to pay out of pocket as I’m not in the age group yet, but I can’t believe the misery I’ve heard about. No thanks. And that includes at least a couple people who got it in their 40’s, so I decided not to wait.
I experienced no side effects. From what I understand, shingles in older adults is pretty severe. Do it.

Got it starting Thanksgiving 2015 but on right side of face, scalp, jawbone, etc. I lost 25% hearing in right ear from nerve damage.
Shingles lasted 3 weeks. Post-herpetic neuralgia immediately followed shingles, and lasted for nearly 2 years. Still feel it occasionally at night, but it’s bearable.
I thought shingles were bad. Nothing compared to PHN. Combined they’re the Devil’s Disease.
I really and truly hate shingles.
Every Thanksgiving since 2007 I’ve come down with shingles.
Sometimes it burns and sometimes it just itches. It usually lingers until about a week after New Years.
Last summer I got the vaccine and it was totally ineffective.
I still got shingles.
there is a newer better shingles vax and even though I took the old one a couple of yrs ago, my doc advised me to get this new one...but she did say wait til I was 65..
Might be Herpes Zoster Oticus (what my doctor called it); related form of Shingles virus...I had a bad case on left side of my head, neck and scalp that left me deaf on the left side...Damaged the auditory nerve, I’m told, so hearing aids are no help...
That was at 52, and I was treated with Famcyclovir, although I’m told there are other more effective anti-viral drugs available now, as well as the vaccination...
Outbreak lasted about 18 months and I still get occasional small outbreaks in the affected area 15 years later...Don’t wish it on anyone...

I got Zostavax last summer. What is Shingrix?
Is it more effective than Zostravax?

I got the shingles when I was 19. Never had a problem since.
I echo the person below: just how new is this? When did it start being administered? Is there a choice, or is it the only thing available now?
I’m definitely getting one, when they “allow” me.
I had it a year or two ago...no side effects. I had chicken pox as a baby. My oldest son had chicken pox, and ended up with Shingles as an adult. It was near his eye, but they caught it early, and it hasn’t come back. He has Rheumatoid Arthritis which he takes injections for. Because they weaken your immune system, he can’t take any flu shots, and I’m assuming he can’t have the Shingles vaccine either.
I read recently that Admiral William Halsey had to sit out the Battle of Midway due to shingles.
I got Zostravax. It turned me into a newt. I got better.
I had to get a Doctor’s script for the Shingles vaccine in order for the insurance to pay for it. I had it dispensed at the local pharmacy. Not sure who paid for it in the end, Medicare or my health insurance. Most likely Medicare paid for it since my health insurance pays for very little these days.
Did you have chicken pox as a child?

I got them on my lower left back a few years ago, ditto on horrible. Can you get them more than once?
Another Freeper (wish I could remember who it was) suggested a book “Shattered Sword” about the Battle of Midway, and these folks did some serious research on this book (It is widely lauded) and tells much of the Japanese side of the battle most of the west is somewhat ignorant of.
I know a bit about damage control on ships, but it was a real eye-opener to read about the deficiencies in the Japanese ship designs (at least at that point in the war)
I believe they looked at Halsey’s condition with a more modern light and came to that conclusion.
But like you, I will chalk it up to “A debilitating chronic skin condition” since I cannot positively ID it either!
I had the shingles on my face and scalp, from my right eye up. I got some scarring on my nose and forehead. The first sign was a sharp persistent pain on the top of my eye. Last year I got that same pain on the eye one and ran to the drugstore and got lysine pills, 500 milligrams, and started dosing myself. The pain went away and I never had the onset of shingles.
Shingles is a form of herpes. Herpes zoster they say. Lysine is a treatment for herpes therefore I thought it might work and it did. Maybe you want to buy some for Thanksgiving present for yourself.
Most adults have the Chicken Pox virus in them, even if you don't remember having it.
This vaccine is 2 doses, 2 months apart. Not made from live virus. 90% effective.
