President Trump Is Not Backing Down on Tariffs

A number of senior members of the US Congress, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, had joined what has been described as “tariffs resistance”, and demanded the POTUS to kill his proposed aluminum and steel tariff proposal. Here’s a statement from Paul Ryan from earlier on Monday:

"We are extremely worried about the consequences of a trade war and are urging the White House to not advance with this plan. The new tax reform law has boosted the economy and we certainly don’t want to jeopardize those gains"

Various other Republican leaders also said on Monday that they’re considering, let me quote, "a potential action down the line" if the Donald pushes his agenda of imposing tariffs on imported aluminum and steel, which by the way makes for one of his quintessential electoral promises, together with renegotiating trade deals like NAFTA et al. However, President Trump seems to be determined to not back down on his Thursday promise, when he made public his intentions of imposing steel and aluminum tariffs, and he said during a Monday oval office presser:

GOOD!

We’ve been the VICTIMS of unfair trade practices for years.

I bet he does not even need to implement them, before THEY back down and remove their trade barriers.

A retaliatory trade tariff I can get on board with to level the field of competition. A protectionist tariff to preserve struggling non-competitive industries I can not.

Like so many times in the past, even talk of tariffs has already become an excuse for raising prices. Wheeler steel went up just about 10% over the weekend and will not honor their published prices on their web site.

Sort of smacks of price gouging doesn’t it?

Expect to see more and more of it. When the President opens the door to excuses for raising prices business walks through with permission. Greed rules the world. Inflation does not do anyone any good but greed does not care.

Exactly.
We have been taken advantage of for decades.

It’s time it stops.

Bravo to Trump.

We’ve had plenty of evidence that the real explanation why these “stupid” politicians and bureaucrats have been willing to agree to increasingly unfair trade agreements is that the other countries PAY THEM to do it, directly or indirectly.

They’ve all been bought.

China CREATED the dumping market. We're going to uncreate it.

Hoping more companies come home.

And he should not back down. Republicans should get on board or resign. Trump can maybe team with Dems if need be.

I can understand why Paul Ryan and his allies are upset when another elected official tries to keep his campaign promises. It makes them look bad.

Amazing, isn't it. There's a long list of Republicans who could hardly bring themselves to criticize Obama or substantially oppose his policies, but they suddenly grow a spine and a loud mouth when it's time to attack Trump for keeping a campaign promise.

I went and read Cramer....just for the hell of it. I'm not worried about the tariffs.

It's not like countries don't put tariffs on our stuff.....AND....even refuse to accept our goods.

Trump is doing this specifically against China, who deliberately dumps steel into Canada and Mexico to take advantage of NAFTA regulations before they end up in the USA.

I think in the end, China will have to accept what the Japanese ended up doing: manufacturing in the USA. Don't be surprised if China's largest steelmakers take over disused US plants or open new ones because of this threat.
