50 Cal vs a Running Car Engine
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 2/27/2018 | J Hines

Do you want to know how powerful the .50 BMG cartridge is?
With its ability to smash through almost any objects from near to unforeseen distances.
Can a .50 cartridge stop a running car engine like you see in the movies?

Youtuber 740 Tactical tried out this test and it they shot at an old junk car with its engine running. With only 2 shots they put it out of commission.
Here's the setup and shot consequences:
The running vehicle was placed at 25-50 yards from the .50 cal.
The first shot was a little high on the engine so it didn’t stop the engine operation.
The second shot was aimed a little lower and it totally put it out of action. See the full footage of this 50 cal vs car engine here.

Surprising, since bullets shot out of any gun other than the ar15 do not move fast enough to cause any damage.

Reminds me of a cartoon in American Rifleman (or one of the mags we got) in the ‘60s - Two guys standing by a car with steam coming from an obviously trashed engine and the guy holding a .44 Magnum Revolver is smiling at the other and saying “Packs quite a punch, doesn’t it?”

Interesting. Take out the timing chain, engine stops cold.
I’d like to see this done to a vehicle put in drive just idling slowly to see what would happen -how far it would go.

That’s what the .44 Mag was designed for. As I recall, it was built for the California Highway Patrol to penetrate the skin of a moving vehicle and destroy enough of the engine block to stop it.

Shooting car engines with 50cal was addressed in Tom Clancy’s “Rainbow Six”. One of the “snipers” used a MacMillan 50cal rifle, and during one operation he stopped a van driven by terrorists by putting a round through the engine block. Knowing Clancy’s penchant for realism, he probably wasn’t guessing about the effects of that round on vehicle engines.

Was a bit underwhelming. I thought .50 cal would blow it up in a nucular fireball.

Takes me back to the "transition era" cartoons.

The shooting range Dad would take me to in the '50s had a sign tacked to a the wall that showed an old geezer in a convertible and the "slogan" was

At 40 MPH, you steer a car.
At 80 MPH, you aim it!
