Cobalt 60 would be a better salting medium.

Who would use them?

People who have prepared underground shelters to keep everyone they care about (not the little people they rule over, to be sure) from the fallout for the duration.

IOW: people who think that they would survive.

Maybe they are looking for something that wouldn’t persist as long?

Why not Cobalt Thorium G?

What a stupid idea. They should pick up the Neutron bomb technology and run with it. IIRC bomb goes boom and kills the people but leaves the building intact, then its safe to go in after 7 years.

Jimmah Cahtah cancelled this program for those reasons...

The way the article is written it is not the half-life they are talking about, but a heightened extent of the fallout.

Never heard such.

“Who would want to kill everybody on Earth?”

(too easy...)

Such bombs are named after a practice from the Middle Ages in which a victorious power spread salt on conquered lands.

Never happened in reality. It's a symbolic concept. Salt was way too valuable back then and not available in sufficient quantities (hence its value).

Is this any worse than fallout from fission products?

Beat me to it!

A Cobalt bomb would kill every living thing on earth.
This sounds like it would cause a lot more harm than an ordinary bomb but not completely lethal.

The half life of radioactive cobalt is 5.4 years. The half life of Tantalum varies on the isotope but looks like it is 50 to 115 days. I couldn’t find a half life on tantalum 181.

Any article that quotes Herbert W Armstrong immediately loses any credibility with anyone who escaped his draconian CULT.

Especially when it attempts to lionize the petty control freak.

I don’t understand why anyone would want to increase the fallout of an area.

You can’t occupy it. The Chinese need land. They don’t want us or our politics. They want our dirt and water.

And furthermore they want us to till those fields.

The Chinese are winning against the US just fine without a shot being fired.

I think I understand it now. It ends up with only a short 114 day half life after having a high Gamma Ray component, making it stronger or more through. So the area isn’t increased as much as the effective area of dangerous radioactive fallout.

Well, isn’t that special.
