And predictably put the blame somewhere else. "Also, the premium increases for health insurance they want from us will cost us about $600,000 every year," Martin Kich of Wright State University writes on the academe blog maintained by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) in a broadside against his university's administration. "Right now, we pay about $1.8 million."
"$600,000 more would be a 33% increase! On top of higher premiums, they want to cut health benefits via increased co-pays, increased out-of-pocket maximums, and increased coinsurance. Needless to say, cuts such as these harm people who are already sick, defeating the purpose of insurance. And these cuts will fall more heavily on the lower-paid faculty. This is the plan they want us to accept! All told the cuts they want from us would save the administration $2.1 million every year--would cost us $2.1 million every year, the equivalent of a 4% cut in pay to the Bargaining Unit as a whole-and to repeat, the majority of the cuts will fall on people who are sick, and for low paid faculty it will be a double whammy."
To be sure, many of Kich's claims about WU's overseers are probably legitimate. We've certainly encountered empire-building administrations before and frequently written about them. Yet and still, every particular he lays out about the increase in health care costs and the decrease in actual coverage has been an experience the rest of us in the non-academic world have been experiencing since, well, since Obamacare's mandates went into effect, when, to paraphrase Nancy Pelosi, we found out what's in it.
If you like your insanity, you can keep your insanity..................
I just want them to “pay their fair share”!
I wish that I had only seen an increase of 33% this past year. FUBO. FUNP.
I have 100% VA coverage but considered signing up for Medicare for convenience. The rule is if you had employer provided insurance when you became eligible for Medicare there is no penalty. Well, guess what. VA coverage is not acceptable insurance. That means a 10% penalty. For me that would mean an 80% increase in premiums...for life! I won’t be signing up for Medicare
They must not have an economics program at WSU......
You can’t cover more people for more things without the cost going up.....says every 5th grader.
Werent they listening when Gruber explained this would happen?
“Werent they listening when Gruber explained this would happen?”
Nah, they were too busy kissing Obama’s backside.
Welcome to socialism 101 professor. Socialism is where everyone becomes equally poor.
This can’t be right. Didn’t Obama promise his plan would save every family a couple thousand per year?
Wow!!! Small business owners have been complaining about this trend for at least two years! I didnt see the university professors recognizing that as an issue, or coming to their defense. And that is probably because of the politics. Who cares about the capitalist, right
So, no one else should come running when the university professors are in the same position. Tell us again professor how socialize medical care is great, and have a nice day!
To satisfy IRS health insurance requirements when tax filing?
It certainly is, I received a letter in January from the VA stating my VA coverage meets the requirements of the ACA individual mandate, including the form to file with my tax return.
Never mind. 😀😀😀
Yes, but that factored in the reduction in costs after one of them has died.
But them perfessers would still vote Obama or Hillary because they can relate to them that screws them....
“If you think healthcare is expensive now just wait until it’s free.” — PJ O’Rourke
We went through the same Obamacare increases. We ended up getting insured through a Healthcare Ministry. We used Liberty Healthshare, although there are about half a dozen choices out there, all of which will save you a fortune.
$600K over 500 members would be $1200 more per year or $100 more per month. And these are presumably family premiums. Big whoop.
