... Besides this being the first time the Heritage Team has done this at the Super Bowl, theres an interesting mix of aircraft flying over U.S. Bank Stadium.
There are four planes representing three generations of aircraft for the flyover: one F-16, two A-10s and a P-51 (more about the planes themselves below). Theyll be flying in a diamond formation with the P-51 out in front, the two A-10s even with each other on the side and the F-16 bringing up the rear.
Its a really unique formation to take a look at, because you never really get to see those vintage aircraft flying with modern fighters, Levy said.
The heritage formation is unique. Its usually just four modern day fighters that are all similar operating a similar speeds and used to doing a flyover together, Maj. John Waters, the F-16 pilot, said.
Its a sign of strength and unity and the sacrifices that have been made. And the cool factor is off the chart. Its a very special event, Hinton said.

Uh, no.
Flyovers are really never waste. They essentially schedule flight training to the national anthem. They have orders to fly in a certain area in particular formation at a designated moment. An actual Win/Win(which is
rare).
Helicopters are faster than the A-10.... /s
jk and I love the A-10.
It is “sort of” practice for the close coordination and timing needed for bomb drops. r
Inside the stadium? Is there room under the roof to fly in formation?
The most unique part is that it will be the first time that all 4 pilots will be giving the teams below the finger simultaneously.
exactly; a colossal waste of taxpayer money
Perfect!
Do any Freepers know just how Bad-@$$ Steve Hinton is as a pilot ? Have you seen the old shows on History or Discovery of flying Zero's and all the other Warbirds over California? Steve was often at the controls. I can't remember if he was flying a Racer @ Reno when I went in 91' ( he may have been starting to be the crew chief for the Pond Racer ) but he is a Racer of some note. He also flew the Old No. 4, the Spirit of Springfield Gee Bee Replica in the "Rocketeer" and I am not sure if it was the Turner Replica or the Kermitt Weeks Replica that bit him and he had a landing accident that banged him up pretty good.
His son is now Racing at Reno and he is young and darn good...
BTW these historic multi-generational fly-by's are done @ Oshkosh, they are amazing, I've seen Mustangs w/ F-86's and the F-22. I may have pictures but I can't post them here, darn it...
Did they do a “missing” man maneuver?
It is a sad waste of time and money.
All hype, big friggen deal, a SB fly over. I do a lot of filming for the clients at airshows and there are always heritage flights with a P-51, F-16, F22, etc, this is not big deal.
I have a feeling that the crowd will also feel it when the jets flyover.
LOL was just imagining the A-10s shooting a row of blanks
It had to be, different roles. Long distance escort fighter, also suited for ground attack vs. tank & bunker busting ground assault aircraft. Love 'em both; the Good, the Bad*, and the Ugly!
*They both bad, baby!
How many progs will be kneeling and booing?
On the other hand, it could well be viewed as a big "stick it up your nose (etc.)" gesture to the kneelers.
Perhaps more likely, it is intended to remind Americans how seriously and how well we regard defense and security.
Hmmmmm...what would Kim Campbell and Martha McSally say? heheh...
Presently I'm living in Tucson and totally enjoy seeing many A10 flybys almost every day. Sometimes I'm up on the hill and I can spot a half dozen or more in the air at once...
So many fantastic aircraft flying around here.
Replace one of the A-10’s with a P-47 Thunderbolt, the original Ground Attack Aircraft.
I have to chuckle a little bit when people on Free Republic wonder why the nation, as a whole, is ignorant about WWII.
For a kid in high school today, WWII is at least three generations away. It is a relevant to kids today as the Spanish American war was to my generation. If I was pressed, I could probably talk my way through an explanation of the causes for the SAW. But, I never spent for than a couple of classroom hours on it.
Let’s face it, the demographics of FR are significantly older than the nation as a whole.
