My final assignment in the Air Force was commander of an engineering unit. I had 100 engineers and technicians in the unit. thirty of them were Blacks. All the Engineers had graduated from good engineering schools. The technicians had either gone through Air Force technician school, or had technician certificates from community colleges. All, including the blacks, were well qualified for their jobs, and did good work. I thought it was one of the best assignments I ever had, because of the quality of my troops. I think my experience belies any claims that there's something "white" about numbers. (For the record, I hold a Masters in electrical engineering, and a Ph.D. in mathematics. I was well qualified to command that unit.)
