NPR just published this article about how students at Baltimore’s public schools are freezing because the classrooms do not have any heat.
One student said she couldn’t feel her feet.
Another student said he was wearing four shirts, two hoodies, and a jacket.
The same article also says that Democratic State Senator Bill Ferguson and Democratic City Councilman Zeke Cohen both said that the city’s public schools did not have enough money.
But like all people who claim that public schools do not have enough money, neither one of of them actually said how much they spent per student per year.
So I looked it up at wikipedia.
The Baltimore public schools have an annual budget of $1.32 billion, and a student population of 84,730.
That works out to $15,578 per student per year.
So, the Baltimore public schools actually have plenty of money.
It’s just that the government bureaucrats who run the schools, have chosen not to provide heat for the students.
I wonder what would happen if Baltimore shut down its public schools, and gave parents a $15,578 voucher for each student each year.
My guess is that the private schools that accepted those vouchers would be properly heated.
I would argue that part of the issue is the lack of insulation (even for the newer schools built in the last decade). Put a building inspector from out of state into these buildings and that will be 50-percent of the issue.

Zeke Cohen is a total leftist asshole. Heard him on TV speaking about something (blaming the conservatives for Baltimore’s bad shape etc) and decided he didn’t know the what the hell he was talking about.
Having been born in Baltimore and raised there/educated there, and worked there, I can safely say on behalf of sane Baltimore area Jews, there isn’t a sane Jewish Democrat politician around. There used to be, i.e. Rep. Sam Friedel, but the leftist Democrats backed Comrade Parren Mitchell (D-Md), a Morgan State college professor and longtime Communist-Party family affiliated radical, and that wiped out the one honorable Democrat from the 5th District.
Mitchell was suspected as being a Soviet (KGB asset) due to his sponsorship of CPUSA-created anti-defense legislation (i.e. the Transfer Amendment) and a very real possible relationship to a congressional hearing witness, identified Soviet spy Victor Perlo, before a House subcommittee on which Mitchell sat. No other subcommittee member would have invited Perlo to testify on economic policies because none of them ever heard of him, only Mitchell.
Other Mitchell family politicos went to jail for food-stamp frauds, possibly bribery, etc. The Mitchells political machine was closely connected to the CPUSA Murphy family newspaper (Afro-American) operation and political organization.
They helped to make Baltimore the shithole that it is today. If you knew where to look and who to watch, then what I have written above will make a lot more sense.
If I am correct, the black attorney for the Freddy Grey family was a Murphy (he is well respected as an attorney but he’s a lefty at heart so you do the math).
Ben Cardin was a neighbor of mine, though I didn’t know him personally. Knew of his parents - great judge, philanthropists/charity fundraisers, etc. Ben did not live in the ‘hood. You should have seen his house, Sequoia at Copley Avenue.
Now he’s an expert on poverty (which the Dems promote in Baltimore), foreign affairs (dumber than Sen. Warner), and military affairs (perhaps he once dated a female soldier).
That’s $15,578 down the rathole, for each and every one of these sad sac “students”.
I will bet you that the real issues are graft, corruption and incompetence.
Actually it is because operating and maintaining a 1200hp natural gas fired boiler system requires a licensed boiler operator and mechanic. Affirmative action placements put your boiler into lock out condition. The state and insurance carrier will pad lock the doors and cut the gas lines to the boilers.
One cubic foot of water expands 1,200 times in volume when turned to steam. More explosive than gasoline and a match. Just imagine what an incompetent fool with a tool belt can do to such a thing?

Very good points. You might also mention that Cardin was in the House, really never having a real job. When Sarbanes retired, he swapped his Senate seat to Cardin in return for Cardin supporting Sarbanes son to Cardinals House seat. Maryland politics at their best.
Let’s not forget featherbedding make works jobs for the politically connected. I’m sure the school system has a ridiculously bloated central office that does little to nothing to improve educational outcomes.
