Vintage Christmas Friday
MOTUS A.D. ^ | 12-22-17 | MOTUS

I know it’s FLOTUS Friday but since Melania and Barron are already in Mar a Lago for Christmas I think we should just let them enjoy the holiday. And while  I’m not tired of winning yet, I am tired of news and politics in general. So what do you say we spend this Friday before Christmas reminiscing: post your favorite vintage Christmas memory from any or all categories:

Toys:

vintage bearsI had this panda! Till my little brother accidentally ripped his head off.

Decorations:

gay lightsPretty sure these wouldn’t pass the 21st century PC test

Ads:

reagan-christmas-cigarettesBeen a long, long time since these would be considered an appropriate Christmas gift. But thank you, President Reagan, for making tax cuts great again!

Books:

magi 3The allusion to biblical events would get this one banned from public school libraries today

Stories:

christmas storyYou KNOW this one will never grace the shelves of your public school

Cookbooks:

f447b67a80410f4e67a2338d2b081560My Mom’s gingerbread men recipe came from this mythical Aunt Jenny’s Christmas cookie book promoting Spry shortening

Cookies: I think we had a discussion about the mechanics of the classic spritz cookies last week. Here they are, along with the original piece of equipment required for making them (a little tricky, but now they have automatic shooters that takes all the challenge out of it) and the original recipe which you may note calls for shortening (Spry, most likely) but please substitute butter. Soooo much better.

Have at it! And Merry Christmas! (Thank you President Trump)

According to legend, a Brennan's, New Orleans, diner exclaimed, “Why, this is as rich as Rockefeller!” The color of greenbacks and so rich-tasting the name signifies the “richest in the world.” Standard Oil's John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937), a name once connoting the pinnacle of wealth and position.

CHEF'S NOTES It is best to use small oyster for this recipe. The oysters themselves (not the shells) should be no more than 1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Any variety of oysters will work; just make sure the oysters you choose are as fresh as possible, still alive, and tightly closed. Learn how to Shuck Oysters.** Herbsaint and Pernod are an aniseed flavored spirit, available where liquor is sold.

PREP With oyster knife, pry open, then remove oysters. Discard top shells; wash and dry the bottom shells. Drain the oysters, reserving the oyster liquor.

TOPPING melt butter; add spinach, onion, parsley, bread crumbs, Tabasco Sauce, Herbsaint, and salt. Cook, stirring constantly, for 15 minutes. Remove from heat. Press the spinach mixture through a sieve or food mill; let cool. Can do-ahea; refrigerate until ready to use.

FINAL Preheat oven broiler. Line an ovenproof plate or platter with a layer of rock salt about 1-inch deep (moisten the salt very slightly). Set oysters in the rock salt, making sure they are level. Place a little of the reserved oyster liquor on each oyster. Spoon an equal amount of the prepared spinach mixture over each oyster and spread to the rim of the shell. Broil approximately 5 minutes or until the edges of the oysters have curled and the topping is bubbling. Watch carefully.

SERVE Garnish the plates or platter with the parsley sprigs and the lemon wedges. Serve immediately.

Rock Em Sock Em Robots

Yes, I know I'm a girl, but Dad didn't care. My first gift was a football. Mom was not amused. :-)

This was one of my most memorable Christmas presents. My stepfather saved the set and gave it to me after I had kids. Unfortunately, since one of the best activities with a slot car set was crashing them into each other, the cars are not in pristine condition. The tracks are fine, if I can ever replace the cars.

I think I had that exact set when I was a wee lad.

Look up "Eldon slot cars" Lots of hits to find replacements.

I got this around 1970/71

Not many toys I have memories of my dad actually playing w/ me.
This is one.

That Prime Rib reminds me of the past couple Christmases - now that the rest of the family is no longer here, we’re sponsoring a pot-luck for folks - not as tasty as the other ones, but it has it’s advantages ...

I still have my mom’s Mirro press cookie maker somewhere - in fact I think I know exactly where it is. I’ll pull it out and see if my wife and daughters want to give it a go.

My wife makes Norwegian lefse every year with a friend. Just like my mom, grandma, great.. well, you get the idea.

I loved the original Vertibird! I would play with it for hours on end. I got a newer version of it for my kids, but I was disappointed because, unlike the original, the new one did not actually fly under it’s own power, it was lifted up by the stick that went back to the base.

Very similar to my dad’s Christmas (Depression era). No stockings - all the kids would leave a plate out at their place on the family table. In the morning, each kid would get an orange and some “chocolate drops” (haven’t pinned him down on exactly what those were) & because he was the youngest (of 6) he would sometimes get a pair of socks. No toys, matchbox or otherwise.

Magical bubble lights on the tree that I’d sit and watch forever. And poor grandfather trying to put the treetop ornament on and falling off the ladder, taking the tree with him.

I remember desperately wanting a "bride doll." And there she was under the tree....so beautiful.

Several weeks later, Mom gave me a beautiful evening dress for the doll....
seems that's what she was dressed in...Mom had made the entire bridal outfit.

I had enough Fat Track to set up a course with 40 ft straights and enough turns to have spiral staircase turns.

The guys in my neighborhood had a LOT of fun with these.
