A few times a week go for a bike ride, or a long walk. Just put on your shoes, open your door and start walking. Half hour per outing is good, more if you feel like it. Combined with diet, you probably will be able to dump the meds.
My husband and I both use the ReliOn brand from WalMart.
We both also take metformin. A word of caution about metformin’s notorious, most common side effect, sudden and somewhat explosive loose bowels. I have never had a problem with this, my husband found relief with the extended release formula.

cut out highly processed foods, get sugar from natural foods like whole fruit with the skin/fiber, drink plenty of water, moderate exercise 2-3 times a week, get sleep especially few hours before midnight and your body will naturally start balancing out the imbalances that lead to diabetes.
Tell your doctor you’d like to try lower dose or no Rx for a few months and retest. Most people don’t need Rx’s if they just do the few things the body needs to work properly. Too many of us just want to live outside the things the body needs and then take Rx and waco our bodies out in other ways in time.
I resisted my doctor on starting cholesterol Rx, she basically fired me, but within 6 weeks of eating healthier moderate exercise proper sleep, my cholesterol dropped 96pts. did not need Rx.

I have several meters after many years. My favs are the Contour and the One Touch Ultra2. What I do is check Ebay for the cheapest strips and use the one that I have strips for. You can get them inexpensively on the web, but just make sure you know the expiry date. I have used out of date and have not seen a difference, but you never know. I use so many, being out of date a month or so has never made a difference for me. I use an in date strip to compare to the batch that may be out a month or 2 and have never found a difference. Other cheaper meters are wrong no mater what the date is. The first meter I got was wrong all the time as much as 20-30 points from my mother in laws meter.
Four years ago, when I was 56; I was pronounced a Type II Diabetic - the test results and my symptoms were proof. My first words to the Dr. were: “Tell me what I have to do to keep my toes and never have to stick myself with a needle.”

One Honey Crisp apple a day, anytime, will help your being more than you knowand it will only be a pain in the ass until the 2nd or 3rd one. After that they are so darn yummy you miss it big time if you dont get your daily Honey Crisp fix.
I have even heard it tell that it works on mutilated genitalia ,but only in severe circumstances.
I usually buy my test strips on E-Bay, you can always find some good deal. Also don’t be afraid to buy test strips that are out of date. Research shows that out of date strips can be good for almost 5 years after expiration.
Get on a Low Carb/No Carb diet and you can reduce the amount of drugs you have to take, maybe even eliminate them.
Were you diagnosed based on your A1C or blood glucose level from a draw? I ask because I always go early in the morning to get my lab draws and my blood glucose level is almost always 110 or higher but my A1C is 5.0-5.5. Blood glucose levels are always high in the morning. Your body increases blood glucose levels as you wake up so you have enough energy to get going.
In most people, Type II diabetes comes down to lifestyle. Follow a Ketogenic Diet and walk 3 miles a day and you can likely reverse it.

Start doing research on Metformin. MY legs are very painful. I Googled it and found many Metformin users are blaming Metformin. I’m sure you won’t find any big studies blaming Metformin or they would take it off the market. There are anecdotal stories of people switching drugs and gaining strength in their legs.
Whittle down carbohydrates: (pastas, rice,etc) as well as the bread.
CAUTION: STATINS - if taking these to lower cholesterol. They can cause sugar diabetes.
My grandfather had diabetes and was on insulin.
My grandmother controlled his diet and made sure he ate healthy: a meat with vegetables, some occasional fruit, etc.
He lived into his 90’s.

To address your question on glucose monitors, the Wal-mart ReliOn is cheap and reasonably accurate. As the other posters have described try to make lifestyle changes to improve your condition. Start watching your carb intake and that means watching what you buy on the grocery list. Check the labels for dietary info. Drink plenty of water. Exercise every day to some degree. Walking is recommended. The A1C is a snapshot of your previous 90 day glucose overall levels and is the most accurate in assessing your progress. If you have any more questions on this I’ll be glad to share what I know.

Know a guy who was on insulin for years and took this stuff to heart, cut the crap out of his diet and started walking constantly and was off all meds and “healthy” again within 18 months.
I got tired of injecting myself so now i just inject my food.
