Realistically, I should sell the Model 8 to someone who will appreciate it as a collector.
Who hunts with hearing protection? That’s taking one of your most valuable senses off the table ?
I have used Peltor electronic hearing protection muffs.
They amplify ordinary sound and cut out gun shots.
Problems: Hot in hot weather, not compatible with hats in cold weather.
Nice comparison,
3 ounces of Gold compared to a half!
Could you get 4 grand for the Model 8?
Hearing protection doesn’t have to degrade hearing, and can even enhance it.

No. Prices seem to be about $500 - $700. Not too bad for a 110 year old gun. But $5,000 to $6,000 would be the value if new, adjusted for inflation!
Many years ago old man Harmon came into the barber shop and everybody started laughing at him and with him as the tale was repeated. He had ordered a hearing aid to help him. in his squirrel hunting and was suffering the consequences. Remember, in the early days they were as large as a man’s hand and. very bulky. He was wearing his new gadget in his bib overalls and kept Turing up the volume as he waited for first light. When a squirrel did appear he forgot to turn off the hearing. device and took his first and only shot wearing a hearing aid. Darn near shattered his ear drums.
In Europe, they are considered good manners.
I have cold anger at FDR and all his ilk for foisting the ill-condidered, anti-constitutional 1932 National Firearms Act on us.
The power mad jerk damaged the hearing tens of millions of Americans with his stupid desire to make America into a fascist totalitarian state.
His destructive legacy lives on. His cousin, Theodore, was a Progressive, but at least he was a sorta rational progressive.
Theodore liked his silenced rifles:

I really like the Remington Model 8. It fits me well. The long barrel jacket makes the front end heavy and stable, so it just hangs there.
It is elegant in its lines. Its mechanism, though complex, is John Moses Browning reliable. It was made with care and precision by master craftsmen in the United States, when those master craftsmen were at their peak before the term “World War” was ever known.
It is a take down rifle that breaks into two simple and easily transported parts (though, so does the AR-15 clone).
Perhaps that is why I hesitate to simply do the smart thing and sell it.

Seems to me youve already done it.

You have meaning in there, somewhere. I cannot seem to detect it. Is there a missing /S?
Maybe referring to my praise of the Model 8, in general?
Maybe you are making an offer?
I passed on buying a Model 8 at an auction a few years ago. I regret that decision. It was in rough shape but it deserved another chance.
thanks for this OP Dean.
You are welcome.
What caliber did you pass up?
The .35 Remington in the Model 8 and the .300 Savage in the Model 81 are the most practical calibers.
Still, brass is available for the others.
Sorry, I can be too clever by half sometimes. I meant you did the smart thing by picking that rifle up in the first place.
So the praise was for both you and that nice rifle.
Enjoy it. Id make an offer but the current project is finishing Mrs. Ls AR.
Best,
