Until imitation guns are made safer, parents should stop buying them, said Sen.Richard Blumenthal last week (Photo: Heather Burian/NBC Connecticut)
A Connecticut Democrat wants parents to pump the brakes on buying toy guns until a bill he has introduced to make them more readily recognizable passes Congress.
Joining Hartford Police and staff at St. Francis Hospital, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal last week described his pending legislation as a simple fix aimed at keeping the public and law enforcement safe. But until it makes it to law, he wants parents to take action on their own to keep toy guns out of their houses.
Whats important here is parents demonstrating responsibility by stopping any purchases of these guns right away until either the gun manufacturers change their practices to make it safer voluntarily, or for my law to be adopted, said Blumenthal as reported by the New Haven Register. Until imitation guns are made safer, parents should stop buying them.
The lawmakers Imitation Firearms Safety Act was filed earlier this month as S.2150 and, though the bills language is not available, Blumenthals office stresses that it would place new restrictions on toys to include a brightly marked barrel that cannot be removed.
Federal law has, since 1988, required that imitation firearms and toys have a permanently affixed blaze orange plug inserted in the barrel and limits the sale of BB guns and similar devices to minors.
That has not stopped states from passing their own, more stringent, requirements on airsoft, air guns and toys made to resemble firearms in recent years that exceed federal mandates.
A similar measure to Blumenthals bill, proposed by U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calf., last session, garnered no co-sponsors.
The new legislation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

Come on. Ralphie would have gotten an M1 carbine because the AR-15 hadn’t been invented.
... has a ring to it. Perhaps all gun control measures should be titled such in the future.
Hey. The lefties can has their fantasies, PROCON can has too. You big meanie.
Ralphie’s got an ACOG ...
I’m jealous.
Did those little snap caps go in the back of the all-metal play bullets?
There’s a 12 year old in Cleveland dead because the panicky cop couldn’t tell real guns from fake guns. Blumenthal may have a point on this one.

STOLEN VALOR CRIMINAL AND LIAR
Okay, it could have been an M2 paratrooper carbine. Satisfied?

He may be but I’m sure his experience in Vietnam taught him all about weapons. He’s probably something of an expert on the subject. Why else would he be talking about it?
I received a Hasbro Ghost Gun when I was a kid. Does that count??? When I learned more about weapons of WW II I used pretend the Ghost Gun was a MP38.
Don’t forget the greenie stickem caps!
Since cosmetics for little boy is the new big thing I guess theyll outlaw toy trucks and toy guns.
Guess he's never heard of black spray paint....(which is what my sons always did as soon as they got one of the toy guns with the orange barrel plugs).
