Sounds like he got a fair look that those two “gun men” were no longer on the same team before pulling him on board. Plus the 911 call corroborated, in general.

Good point... He took a chance and it turned out that he was on the right side. From the interview, it sounds like the shooter perhaps had been hit at the intersection and bled out when he was on the run. Maybe that's why his vehicle left the road? Johnnie didn't indicate that he heard further shots..... It should like the other possibility is that the impact when the shooter's vehicle left the road was fairly severe and that's what killed him.
