A poll by the CATO Institute has shown that 57% of Americans are afraid (presumably of public reaction) to share their political beliefs. Is this because people have “repugnant beliefs,” or is it because a climate of fear and recrimination has been fostered by the political classes?
The never-ending stream of hate and blame that is poured out on social media, and the complicit MSM who see a direct correlation between outrage and viewing figures, have jointly created an environment where a majority of people can only feel comfortable speaking openly to a select few “close-allies” in their lives. And this is not an accidental occurrence, it is fostered, encouraged, and utilized as a way of ensuring that a real majority opinion can never make it to the forefront of politics.

Although I am a native Texan and still use that as my official home of residence, I left in 77 and have only been back for assignments at Ft Hood.
I have to be very careful of anything smelling of anti-muslim sentiment where I currently am, but I think i can get away with the Palestinian one. They do not like the Palis here either.

No. I am afraid my coexist bumper sticker would be the one with all the gun symbols. I really like that one.
I have to order everything and eventually it gets here in the mail. But paper items, especially things like bumper stickers, do not do so well.
I”m in the 57%. I can’t work up the nerve to say to the public that I voted against gay marriage in CA, that I don’t think taking a knee is the worst offense against the flag, that I like immigrants, but abhor illegal immigration, etc. There is enough controversial stuff in my belief system to annoy virtually everyone at every point along the political spectrum. And I actually like to be liked.
So, I am careful who I talk to.
When expressing your mind can cost you your employment, your benefits, land you in an expensive court case or even jail it’s no longer a culture of fear it’s a society of terrorism.
