Wednesday morning, Stat published a piece on the quaint, old-school pharmacy that hand-delivers prescription medications to our hardworking Congress members on the Hill each day.
While the piece was focused on the history and workings of the pharmacy, the Internet zeroed in on one eye-popping section:
Mike Kim, the reserved pharmacist-turned-owner of the pharmacy, said he has gotten used to knowing the most sensitive details about some of the most famous people in Washington.
At first its cool, and then you realize, Im filling some drugs that are for some pretty serious health problems as well. And these are the people that are running the country, Kim said, listing treatments for conditions like diabetes and Alzheimers.
It makes you kind of sit back and say, Wow, theyre making the highest laws of the land and they might not even remember what happened yesterday.
The section clearly suggests that some members of Congress have Alzheimers or some other medical condition that may impair their ability to function in their jobs.
The Internet responded swiftly. Vox did a piece highlighting the section. People on Twitter expressed dismay at the revelation and the apparent breach in trust.
Now, Kim is backpedaling. In a follow-up story on Stat, he tried to set the record straight saying that he was only speaking in hypothetical terms.
I was speaking very broadly about disease states that the general American population have and that it also applies to everyone including members of the US House and Senate since they are also people just like you and I.
He went further, adding:
I am not aware of any member that actually has Alzheimers and would certainly not disclose any such information if I did know... patient privacy is a very serious matter that I am committed to upholding.
As Vox pointed out, the original revelation doesnt appear to violate patient privacy laws because he didnt identify any specific patients.
Considering the average age in Congress, I’d be willing to be Alzheimers meds are probably among his most popular deliveries up there.
And this guy was not speaking in the hypothetical. He knows there are people in Congress who don’t even know what day of the week it is.
Not at all a surprise to me. I watched them wheel Robert Byrd out of there for the final time as a drooling vegetable. We really need Term Limits that include a mandatory retirement age.
McCain is not a Democrat - he’s a Republican, who is no longer afraid to tell you who the Republicans are and what they want to do to your country.
Wake up.
That’s my point. The Republican party is a charade.
Don’t forget Thad Cochran....when they screwed Mississippi over to defeat McDaniel and keep Cochran, there was some shots of him that made one wonder if he hadn’t already lost his mind....McCain is just bat shit crazy and has been since he got out of the POW camp - maybe even before that.
Without naming names (to eliminate any claim of violations of privacy) it should, must and critically as a national survival necessity, be mandatory to make statistics about this horrible revelation subject to FOIA requests, or simply as a statistic essential to the functioning of a healthy representative democracy:
How many (no names, just numbers) members of the bicameral legislative branch of our government are being medicated for diseases compromising normal mental and judgement functions (as well as national security)?

Seriously?
Horsepucky.
How banal is it to put it into words?
Suspicions confirmed!!!!!!!!
On Cochran’s first day back in the Capitol he was supposed to go to the GOP luncheon. He got lost and confused, ended up at the Democrat luncheon...and tried to stay there.

That's after any Kennedy Klan sleep medications are excluded.
A failed effort to produce a “Manchurian Candidate.”
No. Just single term limits and no retirement benefits. You come. You go. You don’t take anything with you.
Or it certainly should be.
Many of us have seriously questioned the mental health of many members of Congress; justifiably.
Didn't the insane exist during the founding of the Republic? What a monumental lapse in the failure of the Framers to address this "little" detail!
Yep - Barbour and company decided they wanted a mental deficient over a real conservative - Cochran is probably getting a LOT of Alzheimer meds from the drug pushers that keep the old regime on their feet.
McConnell has so much to answer for. His favorability is in the toilet, and still he hangs onto his leadership role with a death grip. Hopefully Trump will figure out a way to dislodge him.
Why the timing of this huge thread bomb, which even Freepers seem not to have yet fully grasped?
Could it be that sneaky magnificent b*s***d Trump and his love of 4D chess?
Ya think?
Almost no discussion.
Almost impossible to believe.
Not just one, but two "legal drug" pharmacies for the exclusive use of 435+50 potentially insane (and drugged) elected criminals?
And almost zero discussion?
Not a peep out of anyone I've heard so far, not even Rush L. ...
You mean in addition to the obvious Congressional Black Caucus?
Ummmm...
How about a bit more evidence of actual thought?
I have no facts either way. I don’t trust these clarifications anyway, I go with the odds and odds are there are some. It’s part of aging. Not everyone gets it but odds are at least someone has it.
Do you actually believe nobody in Congress has Alzheimers disease? I wouldn’t be surprised to find out my Senator Jim Inhoff has it. He’s all but gone dark this last year, especially pulling a Harrison Ford not far back.
McCain had part of his frontal lobes removed and he’s running around there.
I couldn’t agree with you more. This information is a political H-bomb. If Trump had nothing to do with the original comment, he’ll have plenty to do with the follow up. This is a DC earthquake—the kind where the aftershocks are worse than the initial jolt.
Rush may be a tad shy of drug stories/issues. He’s dealt with this kind of thing firsthand.
