"We have been attacked," Morgan Freeman stoically announces. "We are at war."
The Oscar-winning actor has played the president of the United States in a time of crisis (in 2008's "Deep Impact"), but this time he's speaking as himself, as a citizen.
In a video from the activist news organization ATTN:, Freeman encourages Americans of every ideological stripe to look with clear eyes at Russia's interference in the 2016 U.S. election. Russian President Vladimir Putin, he argues, wasn't just punking the U.S. He was trying to undermine the country's government and values.
"Imagine this movie script," Freeman says, and then calmly lays out Putin's rise from KGB spy for a superpower to dictator of a bedraggled former superpower. So Putin, Freeman says, "angry at the collapse of his motherland, plots a course for revenge."
His target: You and me. The U.S. intelligence community has concluded that Putin instructed his hackers and disinformation experts to exploit Americans' divisions to make them "distrust their media, their political processes, even their neighbors. And he wins."
Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating possible collusion between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russia, but Freeman doesn't accuse the president of working with or even winking at the Russians. He does, however, call on Trump to finally acknowledge the seriousness of what Putin's regime did and to direct "every resource available to conduct a thorough investigation to determine exactly how this happened."
Will this video or other efforts by ATTN: and the non-partisan Committee to Investigate Russia bring Republicans and Democrats together on the issue of Russia's involvement in the 2016 election? That's unlikely. But, as always, Freeman gives a powerful, memorable performance.

I don't know nothin' 'bout no Oregon newspaper. Or Oregon for that matter. Other than California immigrants F'd it up and Portland is ground zero of the zombie apocalypse.
My point was, how come Morgan Freeman gets to say stupid shit and he gets put in the paper when I say ten times more stupid shit than he does and nobody writes it down. It just ain't fair, I tell ya.
Life sucks. :)
It’s SOOOOOOO funny watching veterans of the Nuclear Freeze movement of the 1980’s now beating war drums against Russia.
You know, you're right. Sometimes I can be unthinkingly cruel. My apologies.
But didn't that "decorating the bar" crack by Vaquero cheer you up? That was a good one, right? In case you didn't see it, 'ol morgan got tortured and kilt by Little Bill (The Duck of Death, I says) and displayed out front of the saloon and was referred to by Clint Eastwood as his friend "decorating the bar."
Vaquero hit the pinnacle of humor with that one and it was right up your alley. Didn't ya like that one, old timer? Wasn't it great?
I grasp fleeting moments of humor and happiness as they pass by.
FR helps to distract me from my malaise.
Let this be one of them my friend. Hang out with me, I'm funny as shit.
You have thrown down the gauntlet, FRiend...
Well, pick it up cousin. Pick it up.
I know that my goto experts on foreign policy are always actors in Hollywood. Is their anything they don’t know?
</Extreme, eye watering sarcasm>
Why can’t ONE OF YOU guys that know your stuff be on the sunday talk shows?
