THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAYS WE HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE HARVEY BEFORE. I have gathered downloads and everything I feel one would need to stay informed about Harvey and EFFECTED AREAS. Our prayers are with everyone in the path of Harvey and the ongoing flooding. God bless all you and all the rescuers out there.

Houston also has some dams that could give way.

I take it you don’t live anywhere near Houston. 50 inches of rain isn’t just “a storm”.

Perhaps the extended duration of rainfall.

Make like in the jungle at night. One foot down at a time, and take ‘er slowly.

I haven’t seen anyone mention it on the news, but it seems to me that there is some similarity between Harvey and Hurricane Allen in 1980. Allen was a category 5 hurricane and one of the strongest hurricanes on record, with sustained winds of 190 mph. Prior to its arrival, Texas (and to a lesser extent other parts of the Central U.S.) were experiencing one of the worst heat waves ever recorded. Central Texas had more than 40 days in a row with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. Weathermen were starting to discuss the possibility that this “heat dome” might actually become a permanent feature. As record breaking Allen met the record breaking heat dome, Allen stalled offshore until winds decreased to 30 mph before coming ashore. While stalled, up to 20 inches of rain were dumped on south Texas. I’m surprised that nothing has been mentioned about it.

I haven’t watched the coverage so I’m going going by the concerns from people viewing in other states who’ve contacted me and some friends of mine.

The media tends to focus on the flood damaged areas and high bayou levels. Neighborhood streets and majors roads not so much.

Roads that had flooded at 8am were clear by 3pm in my area. This isn’t to say that it is safe to drive or all is done. More rain has been coming down since 4pm. But it isn’t rain onto already flooded areas near me.

The bayous will continue to stay high (and some of those go over roadways and highways near downtown)..

There are those who wanted to spends tens of millions building a “river walk” like San Antonio has along the bayou outside of downtown. To keep the businesses from being completely underwater every year, they’d have to follow through on their little discussed plan to divert the bayou other places. Which is why some neighborhoods that never flooded now do.

New neighborhoods are being built (or torn down and rebuilt denser) and it is affecting the runoff.

The affect of a rainstorm is equal to the product of two factors: 1) the severity of the storm and 2) the number of building permits that were issued within the bounds of intermittent lake and stream beds.

What great pictures.

And those gun owning Cajun clingers bringing their “navy” to help out. That’s the American spirit at work.

I actually had some idiot state to the effect the following in response to my comment about the hurricane drought and lack of extreme weather the climate change nazis predicted:

“Down here in Houston we had more tornado warnings and watches yesterday than the national weather service has ever before called. We go from years of drought to repeated flooding events. Currently some of the worst flooding we’ve ever seen from a hurricane that didn’t even directly hit us. Seems like weathers getting pretty extreme to me.”

Let's see. They've never seen a storm like this before. And that's with a sample of .000000027 of 1% of all the years of storms this planet has ever generated...

Gotta be global warming! It couldn't be a political agenda, since with no one EVER questioning their data, who's to know? It's consensus. (And deny anyone who disagrees.)

When I lived in a hurricane-prone area, I could not watch TWC. I just checked in with NOAA Atlantic every two hours. I got the facts but not the hype.

National Weather Service Says HARVEY Is Unlike Anything They Have Ever Seen...probably not if they're younger than 117 years old - on Sept. 8, 1900 a category 4 hurricane struck Galveston with a fifteen foot storm urge that killed over 6000 people - that must have been something to see too.....

I take it you are completely unaware that many people on this forum have lived through very many hurricanes and typhoons.

Devastating rain like this is par for the course in that type of storm.

I have lived through a lot of this, and it has happened on the Southeast coast, the Gulf coast, the Philippines, Okinawa, and mainland Japan while I was in those places.

Devastating weather is nothing new.

I have cleaned up a hurricane or two in my life.

This one is quite extraordinary as it has no steering.

High pressure over the midwest keeps it in place. This will be a catastrophic event over the area.

There will be no comparison. Prayers for Texas.
