Anyway, you must have led a very sheltered life down there. I can assure you that in the rest of the South, its no big deal to have Jimmy or Jimmie as a legal name on your birth certificate and drivers license.
I don’t know what you’re talking about. My sheltered life includes twenty years in the Navy, visiting many countries and living in several states, and growing up an Army brat. I think you misread my original post or something, because what you’re talking about has nothing to do with it. My point was that a young black male did not know that Jimmie is the nickname for James and the cultural implications of that. What does that have to do with southerners having two names or being actually named Jimmy? Do you honestly think I don’t know that?
>> Do you honestly think I dont know that? <<
Yep, you sure gave that impression.
I worked in ghetto schools with kids who will, in their lifetimes never, ever pick up a book or other printed material and simply read it for pleasure.
I’m pretty sure some of my former students are in prison.
If not, they should be. They were sociopathic and a threat to civilization.
It was obvious Suthener was referencing the ignorance of the typical ghetto dweller, and not The South.
Sad aint it reading was is a wonderful way to learn about stuff and oneself

Yes, but he also suggested that if somebody is called Jimmy, his proper legal name has gotta be James.
Nope. That’s flat-out incorrect. Jimmy and Jimmie are definitely found as LEGAL names all across the South — even among white people who never venture into the Ghetto.
(But I’ll grant that maybe the situation is different in the extreme southern tip of Alabama. Haven’t visited there in almost 30 years. I can say, however, that Orange Beach and Dauphin Island were very nice in those days!)

No, I didn’t suggest it nor do I believe it.I don’t know how you read that into what I wrote. Your reading comprehension could use some work.
T-Bone,
You got my point. Thanks.
What’s an Ed2909?
