WASHINGTON (AP) — This year's Kennedy Center honorees will include two singers, a television writer, a dancer - and for the first time, a hip-hop artist.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday announced the recipients of the 2017 Kennedy Center Honors. They are: hip-hop artist LL Cool J, singers Gloria Estefan and Lionel Richie, television writer and producer Norman Lear and dancer Carmen de Lavallade. It's the 40th year of the awards, which honor people who have influenced American culture through the arts.

The honorees will be celebrated at a gala on Dec. 3, featuring performances and tributes from top entertainers and attended by President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump.....

Norman Lear looked really old when I saw him circa 1973 near where my mom and her friend were auditioning for The New Treasure Hunt game show.

Somebody ought to ask Lear why he attended Jane Fonda’s fundraiser (also sponsored by the Marxist Guardian weekly (US publication), for identified Australian Communist Party member, id. KGB agent, Hanoi propagandist and Red Chinese psy-ops agent during the Korean War, Wilfred Burchett.

See details at “www.keywiki.org”, “Wilfred Burchett page.

These were Hanoi fu*kfests of traitors.

Just WHO picks the honorees and does the president have to go to this garbage?

All these people were most famous thirty or more years ago.
Norman Lear had the most lasting impact. Lear is on par with Carl Reiner, who also cranked out top quality comedy series.
I forgive them for being dyed in the wool Liberals.

LL Cool had the least impact on society, in my opinion.
Just one of the many scat rhyming, street talk cursing Stage Thugs who appeared on the scene and survived. NWA is another.
But then, I’ve never been much of a Rap fan anyway.
Who am I to judge?

President Trump and Melania will be there.
Can the honorees make it through one evening without grandstanding? Without letting their vicious #NeverTrump anger lead the way? That is the big question. Katy Perry could not do it.

LL Cool J deserves it.

One of the nicest entertainers I ever met and funny as heck.

Ran into him several times during breakfast and he’s always nice and a real cut up.

Pretends he’s a waiter and serves coffee, if I don’t serve him first.

Did a couple nice things for a friend of mine. Nothing big but, demonstrated a genuine affection for his fellow human family, with humor.

Trump should boycott it like the White House Correspondents Dinner. Nothing to gain by attending and probably something to lose by attending. Screw the America haters!!!

LL Cool J also happens to be married to the mother of his five children, and she's wife #1! I, too have met him and thought he was a doll.

Much as I like LL Cool J, I read an article somewhere that I agree with: in the last decade or so, the Kennedy Center honorees are no longer composers, opera singers, serious writers, etc. Mixing in some pop cultural figures is one thing, but a steady stream of pop stars doesn't bode well for our culture.

It is what is and he is as nice as Tonh Danza, who I had donner with several times in the 90’s, when we dined before his Broadway show, as we stayed in the same hotel.

Dianna Krall also was wonderful as was one of the Bee Gee Brother’s, who we contested buying each other drinks whenever we occassioned the bar at the hotel we were staying at.

In fact, I don’t recall ever meeting anyone in entertainment who was particularly unpleasant, even after tbey discovered my political persuasion.

When they disagredd witb me because of my “peculiar” voting tendency, I asked they hear me out and if they disagree then please rebutt.

To a person, tbey found my reasoning agreeable witb their position and I always ask “So what do we actually disagrees on?”

Laughs, drinks and teasing about me being a Republicanbbbut, I always left them witb a thought, after a history lesson about tbeir about tbeir side and ours, they felt compelled to at least look into tbe history as well the intent

You know LL is gunna say something bot duh black lies mattah. How in hell was HE chosen, BTW? Lear is going to shit all over Trump. AND STPHEN KOLBURT IS THE F--KING HOST! Kolburt just told Trump "F--k you+ last week, and gave him the double middle finger.

THIS is part of the swamp. I would have had drained it in week 2. And no more of this garbage would be happening. He's surrounded by morons and he has no idea about anything outside his micro worldview.

So you want to: a) keep rewarding leftist a-holes. Or maybe it's b)...

You like to see Trump set up and humiliated in person by leftist a-holes. Which one is it? A, or B? Or both?

This is the part repugnicants are even more stone cold clueless about than usual : the culture. At the very least, The White House needs to make it clear kolburt is to be NO part of the ceremony--find someone else. I would also try to rescind Lear's award, as well, but that is likely too late. This is by FAR the worst class of "winners" I have ever seen, since the award began 40 years ago. This is the BEST we could do?

The smart thing for Trump to do is get rid of the dickboy as emcee, not attend.

Get back to me when you, placing yourself as being smarter than Donald Trump, manage to get yourself elected President. Until then your stupid projectile whinging is not helpful, you honestly think he’s unaware of these things? They’ve been out for blood in both parties since he won the Republican nomination. Just who is it, other than your own silly self vaunted in your own mind though you obviously are, that you think could possibly withstand this unprecedented onslaught better than Trump has? Nobody, that’s who, certainly Ted Cruz would have imploded before the Presidential election, if he’d somehow managed to get the Republican nomination. So, cool your jets, snarkboy, it’s unproductive and undermining, not helpful at all.

YEAH, he is unaware of these things.

I ran into bushbots 15 years ago who said the same things as you. Time is on my side. Duh-bya was surrounded by dopes and backstabbers and he failed to purge the goverment of clintonoids. and Trump is facing the same problem. And he is going way too slow on draining the swamp. He needs to get this done NOW, so he can get something done before the midterms. Tell me, why did he hire McMaster? Without saying either "8475648383-D chess", and "keeping your friends close and enemies closer". Is this all an elaborate scheme? Or did he screw up somewhere along the line and we are ALL paying for it? We do not have any chances left after this.

Stop and think about this, and then review your stupid bashing comments here. Yours is not constructive criticism. As far as being a "Bushbot" I risked being zotted here for the better part of 2005 speaking out against George W. Bush, he went completely off the rails at the beginning of his 2nd term, which is what prompted me as a longtime lurker to finally sign up to FR, so ESAD for that remark. You are being corrosive and damaging, not supportive. No way to treat what you rightly term the last chance, one of the few things you've been right about.

First of all, Bush started failing right out the gate, and the "fix was in" by the friday after 9/11. I'm glad you finally got on board that train; things run a little slow in Regulator Country, it appears...

Let's get something straight: I'm going to criticize Trump any damn time I feel like it. And i'm going to do it any way I please. I'm not falling for the "master tactician", "God -Emperor" garbage YOU may be willing to felch out of each others' rectums to make yourselves feel better as the kenyan runs wild in a house a few blocks away, his holdovers are still there to gum up the works, and some of Trump's own hires (and family) want to do the complete opposite of what we want--and need--done. Again, why did Trump hire General "I agree with Susan Rice" McMaster?

I hope this is all some sort of "Master Plan™", and someday, Mueller's going to turn it around and focus on Hillary, which will expose her foundation and skippy and the pedos and Epstein and Bill and Uranium One and 0dunga and DWS, and the entire democrat party gets shot by a firing squad and McCain gets a stroke and stumbles over the Capitol balcony to the hard floor below and McConnell pulls a Bud Dwyer, and a senior citizen pushes Paul Ryan off a cliff but I learned it fast. I learned it young. Someday never comes. It could, if we push them. But it usually never comes.

I have a sincere, if not serious, question:

When you socialize with a person, such as “LL Cool J,” who does not seem to have a name, how do you address him? Do family and social acquaintances call him Jack or Bob or something?

“Honoree recommendations are accepted from the general public,[7] and the Kennedy Center initiated a Special Honors Advisory Committee, which comprises two members of the Board of Trustees as well as past Honorees and distinguished artists. The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees selects the Honoree recipients based on excellence in music, dance, theater, opera, motion pictures or television.[8]”

The Board:

Looks like there were changes in the selection process made in 2013 to increase diversity (of course):
