Employers and recruiters looking to fill positions in Maine are scouring the U.S. for people who once lived in the northern New England state in hopes work will coax them back.
With the state's unemployment rate hovering at 3.5%, near record lows, the labor market is tight, particularly in the southern part of the state near Portland, Maine's largest city with 67,000 residents.
Though the state known as "Vacationland" draws tourists to its coastal hamlets and rugged wilderness, it can be harder to convince outsiders to actually live there, recruiters say. Maine doesn't have a deep roster of major companies, lacks a large city and has notoriously harsh winters.
To improve his odds at finding a good candidate, recruiter Ed McKersie, who runs Portland staffing firm Pro Search Inc., looks on social-media sites such as LinkedIn to identify ex-Mainers and graduates from Maine colleges who might be convinced to return to their old stomping ground.
"They know what it's like here, they have an affinity," said Mr. McKersie. He said the key is to show ex-Mainers that the state has more available jobs than they may think.....

And have Collins as their senator? Ha!
Don’t mind all the Somalis.
Wasn’t one of Obama’s spawn working as a waitress in Maine last summer? Maybe she is available again.
why would they go back to somaliland.
They put Somalis in MAINE?
oh yeah Lewiston is full of em, has been for a decade.
Home prices are increasing rapidly now not much on the market
Maine is an extremely difficult state to live in.
Winter last forever, April and May aren’t very pleasant, not uncommon for snow to arrive in mid November.
The isolation in most of the state is overwhelming as is the endless grey skies.
costs of a house are increasing in Maine?
Last time I was there I saw for sale signs everywhere. This is all inland though.
Or get shot by one whom the police has hired stupidly.
yup!..the unemployment rate was so low in Lewiston....they needed them on food stamps to bring it back to the norm.....
Well I've never been to Maine
but I kinda' like the music
say the ladies are insane there
and they sure know how to use it
I read this wrong. I was visualizing them plucking residents out of nursing homes b/c they can’t fill jobs. They are welcome to use my idea, though :)
As I recall they settled a bunch in Maine purely because at the time, that’s where the welfare benefits were maximized, climate be damned.
Portland is a mecca for Somalis, fags, hipsters, militant bicyclists, and cancer cell libs. It is to Maine what Acapulco is to Toronto. Portland might as well rejoin with Massachusetts.
The only publicity Maine gets is from Stephen King’s novels. “It” is coming out this year. Let’s all live in Maine, where sewer dwelling clowns eat your kids.
You got that right!
That’s my wife’s favorite actor.
Those Somalis are probably the reason the state needs Americans to return; here in NJ the Americans are fleeing because they are taxed to death providing everything for foreigners. Maine needs to re-create a taxpaying population to feed, clothe, house, and school their immigrants...
