There is no question that the President is both frustrated with and very fond of his Attorney General, Jeff Sessions. President Trump was caught off-guard by Sessions decision to recuse himself from the Democrat/Media-generated Russia Collusion fantasy play, and has stewed about that decision ever since. At the same time, though, Sessions was and remains one of the Presidents earliest and most loyal supporters, and the two obviously like one another.
But the President definitely wants to move Sessions out of Justice, so that he can appoint a new A/G who can exert some semblance of control over the ever-expanding, obvious witch hunt that Special Counsel Bob Mueller is running. Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein, the lifetime swamp creature who appointed Mueller, has steadfastly refused to exercise any oversight whatsoever.
But Trump has been warned by squish GOP senators Ben Sasse and Lindsey Graham that the senate would never confirm a new AG nominee if Sessions is fired. Both senators also made it clear they would never allow the President to make a recess appointment for the AG post.
So what does any of that have to do with the resignation by Reince Priebus and his replacement with DHS Secretary Kelly? Well, consider the following possible steps available to the President now:
- Because Sessions has already been confirmed by the Senate for a cabinet post, those squish senators would have no ability whatsoever to interfere if Mr. Trump wanted to replace Kelly at DHS by moving Sessions into that job;
- Because EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt has already been confirmed by the Senate for his position, those squish senators would have no ability whatsoever to interfere if Mr. Trump decided to move the former Attorney General of Oklahoma into the Attorney General slot;

That move requires confirmation. The other moves are of already confirmed people.
Might want to throw McMaster into that game
Vacancies Act. Each acting official has a one year shelf life. No need for recess apptt. Recess Apptt has a different (variable) shelf life, too.
Thanks! Again!
Confirmation has bottleneck and “candidate-by-candidate” issues. The senate successfully blocked 10 or so GWB judicial appointments for three years. Certain positions get lots of attention. AG is one of those. Just for reference, Sessions would not have made it through but for the newfangled “Reid Rule.” Vote was 52-47 Party line except Macnchin (d) voted Y. Total 99 because Sessions abstained.
Any of the Clinton backers that Mueller's added to his team connected to the Russian/Democrat election dirty tricks used against President Trump?
I’d love to continue with you but FR is down again :(
Whom do you hope Trump will nominate for Secretary of Homeland Security? I hope he’ll choose George Allen. He’s a Virginia conservative who was a congressman, governor, and senator. He was a member of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, and, part of that time, he chaired the subcommittee about Europe.
But "Macaca".
I don’t think he could handle the negative PR that will come with that job. There will be leftist photo op after leftist photo op of scared, crying pitiful looking illegal women & children that need to be sent packing! However the MSM & THE LEFT will use these to melt the heart of the low-info voter and scare the cowardly GOP incumbent! Just wait its coming ! Allen doesn’t have the PR moxie or stones to handle that kind of negative political press. He showed he didn’t with the “macaca” thing!
I like Allen but sadly he’s yesterday’s news!
Good choice, this will piss the Macaca Americans off.
FWIW, Cabinet shuffles are routine in Canada, and other members of the Commonwealth Realm.
If Sessions is moved to DHS he is still employed, right Linda?
Pruitt was not part of Trump’s campaign. That is an instant check on Rosenstein and Mueller at DoJ.
Methinks there is more to come...

In the immortal words of the great Bill Buckley, "That's pathological nonsense!"
I swear, you folks need to stop acting like Messianic cultists for Trump. Cultism is for leftists.
We don't really know yet whether or not our President has a handle on this. Let's see how it plays out.
