DOS stands for denial of service attack. In which the goal is not to break into the target server, but to overload it with useless requests, so that it crashes, or its legitimate users are unable to get through.
Example: Perturbed by FR's existence, a moonbat rents a botnet, consisting of thousands or millions of malware-compromised computers scattered around the world, and orders the compromised computers to flood FR with junk requests. Using a botnet to commit DOS is known as DDOS, for distributed denial of service. The bogus requests come from a wide range of IP addresses, not just one or a few, and thus are harder to reject based on IP alone.
