James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old man from Illinois, walked onto a baseball diamond Wednesday in Northern Virginia and shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise. Four others, including a congressional staffer, a lobbyist, and two members of the Capitol Police, were also wounded in the attack.
Six years ago, Jared Lee Loughner, a 22-year-old man from Arizona, opened fire outside a grocery store, seriously injuring Democratic Congress member Gabrielle Giffords and killing six others.
Since then weve witnessed a host of terror attacks and mass shootings in San Bernardino, in Colorado Springs, in Charleston, in Chattanooga, in Santa Barbara, in Fort Hood, in Santa Monica, in Newtown, in Minneapolis, in Aurora, and in Oakland.
The motives in each of these attacks vary, but theyre all united by the thread of violence.
This is not America circa 1968, much less America during the Civil War. Things can be and have been much worse. But we are never far removed from chaos and violence.....

What were Loughner’s politics?
An Atheist Gold-bug as I recall.
Left wing
Do 97% of these “experts” agree?
are we descending into violence. Oh goodness I certainly hope so. Need a good, cleansing fire. The garden hasn’t been weeded in decades
incoherent and all over the map
Keep in mind that the guy was basically a psych experiment gone wrong, so the specifics of what he may or may not have believed need to be understood in that context, as well as in the context of the motives of those who reported his statements.
The Loughner/Giffords situation stinks to high heaven and the psych treatment angle was never properly investigated.
IIRC, he was a former campaign worker for Giffords, but she wasn't radical enough for him.
If Vox’s target audience were smart, they’d not be pushing for war. However, that would be asking for too much.
Living north of Tucson, maybe our news was more complete. According to reports (no, I don’t remember from whom, but it has been 6 years), Loughner had been to one of her ‘Congressman on the Corner’ events and had a flyer that he had written angry things all over. He was a Lefty, who had been reported to the Sheriff/Police many times for threats to people. But his mom, a higher up in the Dem party in Tucson, worked for the Parks Dept, so he was never investigated. He was creepy, but his mom’s position bought him some bulletproof armor. Very sad. I don’t know if you remember the others killed? One was a Conservative judge who had shielded an elderly man with his body. Nearly nowhere in the news was it reported that Judge Roll was a Conservative. Biased news has been the norm for decades. And rarely was it reported that Loughner was a big Lefty either.
Thanks for the refresher! I’m remembering somthing... hadn’t the judge just issued an order that Obama was mad about?
oh yes... Roll had days earlier issued a preliminary injunction against the Obama admin in a case in which the latter claimed the right to seize citizens’ assets without cause
12 experts? More like 12 leftist college professors. The entire article was basically a bunch of anti-Trump liberals calling conservatives racist thugs.
looney left
The author attempts to explain what he perceives as a wave of “terror attacks and mass shootings.” He has a rather curious list of such events. It’s conspicuously missing the Orlando night club shooting, in which 50 people were killed and another 44 wounded. His list is also missing the Boston Marathon Bombing, in which 3 people were killed and several hundred injured.
I don’t know that we have a good database of “mass murders.” You’d have to start with a definition. The wikipedia entry says at least 6 people killed, or 4 or 5 people killed and a total of at least 10 people injured, or 2 or 3 people killed and a total of at least 12 people injured.
Looking over the list the author assembled, other incidents on the wikipedia entry, and yet other incidents that I simply recalled from memory, the only thing that jumps out is Muslims.
Other than Muslims, it looks like a random trickle of anti-social, loner/loser types, some of which have been diagnosed as schizophrenic. I mean, you have one or more of Goths, Confederates, Progressive Socialists, Hispanics, just about everything, but not many females.
As to the author’s thesis that more polarization equals more political violence, I’m sorry, but I would like this to be demonstrated. I suspect the only thing that has changed since the 1980s is that we now have a wave of Muslim violence (thankfully not as bad as Europe).
One instance of a Bernie Sanders supporter going over the edge doesn’t make a wave. But, we’ll see where this leads. If the kooks on the left continue to radicalize those on their side, with their tinfoil hat conspiracy theories and gallows humor, we might wind up with a wave of leftard violence in addition to a wave of Muslim violence.
Looking down the list of “experts,” almost everyone works at a university or college. Talk about stacking the deck.
Article is a waste.
The blood of tyrants and patriots...
And remember the Civil War had more killed than all the wars the US has been in....combined.
So this is potentially pretty bad.
Democrat crazy. He shot Gifford because he thought
she was to conservative. He's crazy.
