The Morlocks (more locks, get it?) lock themselves away from the horrors of the society they create, smug in their isolation and ability to feed off everything outside. They figuratively and literally live off a world which long ago they fashioned for their personal benefit. Outside, something happened. Good triumphed over evil, and what was needed was a leader to inspire them to resist. That leader came along, from another time, and good triumphed over evil.

Amazing how many summaries make the Morlocks out to be the good guys. Amazing that HG Wells in 1895 (before WW1) saw that the elitists of Europe were leading the world somewhere pure evil.
