Not Just for Moms: Trump's Budget Proposal Includes Paid Family Leave for All New Parents

President Donald Trump is looking to make good on his campaign promise to ease the financial burden on new parents, by including paid family leave in his budget request to Congress next week.

Trump's first budget proposal as president will include the creation and funding of a program to provide all mother and fathers with six weeks paid time off after the birth or adoption of a child, two White House officials told The Washington Post. This outline makes the plan far more inclusive than the original family leave idea Trump touted during his election campaign, which excluded fathers. First Daughter Ivanka Trump has been pushing for paid parental leave.

The proposed new benefit would be paid through the country’s unemployment insurance system and cost about $25 billion a year, according to the Post. The White House estimates that 1.3 million people would benefit from the proposed program, which would have no income limit, though high earners would have a capped benefit.

Trump's push marks a key departure from Republicans' traditional opposition to paid family leave, a benefit long espoused by Democrats. The concept has wide public support, with 82% supporting paid maternity leave and 69%, paid paternity leave, according to Pew Research Center, Still, it remains to be seen how the idea will fare in Congress. There is little word on exactly how it would be funded, and the president is seeking wide cuts to many programs to help pay for a big increase in military spending.

Currently, 58% of American companies offer at least some wages to employees on maternity leave, primarily in the form of disability insurance, a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management and the Families and Work Institute found. And 12% of companies offer some income to dads on paternity leave....

Is Trump going to pay for those extra employees who must be hired to take up the slack?

The proposed new benefit would be paid through the country’s unemployment insurance system and cost about $25 billion a year

Expect the real cost to be 50% higher first, year, with 20-30% yearly increases thereafter.

Thank God we have a completely unbacked, fiat currency, and a Federal Reserve that can create money from nothing to support massive government debt - or progress politicians would actually have make real choices and limit government.

Oh please.

Are you pro life and pro family? I’d rather see the government support moves like this that help working families than BS like Planned Barrenhood

Hummmm, I think not, the Government has no business even being involved unless it is the direct employer. How about 4 week of mandatory vacation and a Tesla as well.

This is a lot more than they're giving Planned Parenthood, and isn't funded any more than the PP funding was.

Yes, I am. Unfortunately the government 100% supports Planned Parenthood, and the new budget catered to them.

Yes, a good proposal would be for the first x billion of funding on this to come from the draining of the Trump/Kushner coffers.

NO. This is another nanny-state project, that will have highly political (leftist) strings, which will serve the long-standing leftist narrative that the traditional nuclear family is not necessary, and indeed, that fathers are not needed because now Uncle Sam will provide for baby mommas.

Also, hold your comments until gay couples are granted paid-for "maternity leave."

If you think families are actually supported by governmemt giveaways of other people’s money, I wonder what you are doing at FR. Unless of course you figure you would be a beneficiary of such redistribution and so somehow this program must be different.

This is a hollow move.
Sure, it helps some families but it hurts even more who won’t be hired because of the cost of this to employers.

Also, people need family leave at more times than just when they have a new baby. They need time off when older children are ill, or when taking care of other ill family members, likely elderly parents. If you are in a family, there are many situations over a lifetime that would require time to personally handle. Employers and taxpayers can’t foot the bill for all of that.

Nice gesture but empty.

This is one of the libs' utopian ideas taken from the socialist countries in europe, but is included in the budget proposal as something that can be traded in negotiations. Trump knows that this is far to expensive for business.

Most of us were aware that Trump is big government when it comes to health and education. taking the bad with the good. Been a bit too much bad lately though.

Mr. Trump - you cannot drain the swamp when you feed the alligators.

Ridiculous and insane. I was surprised to see that Trish Regan on FBN is in favor of this.

I should not be obligated to pay for other people’s reproduction decisions. And we will pay. If the employee works for government, then our tax dollars foot the bill. If private industry, we will pay more for goods and services to foot the bill. This is NOT a government function. And get Ivanka out of the frickin’ White House.

In effect, people doing the same work are getting a pay decrease. Those who have already had children, don’t have children, have older children, will naturally feel resentful if they have to shoulder the extra work or train temps. Already childless people pay for parks, schools, etc. for the benefit of children. Having children means sacrificing some things in order to have the joys that children may bring. Experience tells us that people will demand that the same be given to take care of pets, (people say things like “my dog is my baby”), elder parents, and so on. Can already hear the howls, “NOT FAIR!)
