Republicans Lost Huge Vote On Healthcare Bill – Trump Declares Victory On Spending Bill

Congress member Fred Upton of Michigan, who until January had been chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, one of the main health care legislating committees in Congress, officially came out against the American Health Care Act on Tuesday. Upton made the announcement during a local radio interview, and his office confirmed that he is a “No” vote on the bill. Why did Upton do this?

His official announcement says: We know the senate would never accept this provision. There is some thought about, let’s just send it to the Senate, let them fix it, and send it on to the president. I sat down with a number of Freedom Caucus folks yesterday and they’re not willing to budge, at least at this point. I can tell you there are a number of Republicans who are saying this isn’t going to fly.

We’ve talked about the protection for those with pre-existing illness for last number of years. We’re not going to budge either. How it plays out, I don’t know, but there are not the votes as of this morning to move this vote forward.

Here’s what Upton told Bloomberg last week:

Upton, for example, said his main concern is how those revisions affect coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions.

“The issue is potential higher costs to those with pre-existing illnesses,” he said. “They’re trying to say that they still maintain access with continuous coverage but the question is what happens on the costs side of the thing.”

“Trump Declares Victory On Spending Bill”

The dems and the GOP-e got exactly what they want. Chuck U. has been boasting for days.

And this is a “victory”?

Hoo boy.

But I get what Trump is saying here. Had he vetoed this bill, he would have lost and been humiliated and defeated in an override.

rest:

Upton had been the co-author of previous Obamacare repeal-and-replace plans. He has also helped author other major health care legislation, including a bill that overhauled Medicare payments to doctors and the 21st Century Cures Act, which sought to speed up drug approvals and medical innovation. Losing him means the latest push toward a repeal bill may be doomed yet again.

This is a disappointment that so many Americans never saw coming when President Trump first took office. He had Americans hopeful about the repeal of Obamacare. I remember watching a video of him with many he had invited to the White House to discuss their problems with Obamacare. He encouraged them to expect better days ahead with a new Trumpcare. He promised to keep the pre-existing conditions clause AS IS, as the one facet of Obamacare that would not change. Now it appears those with pre-existing conditions may have to pay more for their healthcare. I don’t understand any of it, but I know there is sorrow in this Land right now.

President Trump has declared a victory on a spending bill that will fund the government through September. I agree that it is a good thing the government will not shut down, so I understand why he sees this as a victory. However, he proclaimed to a group in the Rose Garden that the US would see increases in defense spending and an end to “painful cuts to our military.” Is this all that matters now to Trump? Does he really think that the typical American puts defense spending ahead of their healthcare and tax cuts? Will the real President Trump please step forward now?

President Trump said: “With this major investment in America’s national defense, a core campaign promise of mine, we are at last reversing years of military cuts and showing our determination and resolve to the entire world — and believe me, the entire world is watching — and we have resolved like never, ever before,” he said.

Hey Upton--I want to call the insurance company when my house is on fire and get covered. And I want to slam my car into a wall and then call the insurance company to get a lower deductible.

WHY is this guy claiming to be a conservative?!

Just heard Newt Gingrich on the Laura Ingraham show and he said he’d visited the WH yesterday or today and got some detailed info on the CR. He said there was plenty of money in the CR to start building on the wall, but that the CR prohibited the use of concrete, but they could build the steel type structure that already exists in some places along the border.

Don’t know how correct Newt will prove to be, but he seemed to think funds for the huge, concrete wall Trump wanted were not approved, but funds for a steel structure were.

I guess the facts will eventually be known after all the spin and misreporting and people who don’t know what the CR allows.

Oh what a lying, manipulative media.
Upton is the biggest RINO in the House.
"Upton had been the co-author of previous Obamacare repeal-and-replace plans"- that never had a chance of being signed by Obama and were just phony 'show votes' for the RINOs to wave in front of their voters.

The same nitwit that brought us the ban on incandescent light bulbs, just to show the Left that we were 'serious' about 'global warming'.

Can't this jerk be primaried?

It’s pretty obvious that too many Rs in congress should have a D by their name when it comes to health care. They want single payer health care. Period. They are playing games so some money goes through the government as taxes or fines. Other money goes through “insurers” paid by individuals or employers. But it’s not INSURANCE. It’s a program for everyone to pay for health CARE for everyone else no matter how complicated they make the path of money going from individuals to health care providers.

Congress should stop trying to reword it so that it looks like they “fixed” or replaced it. Just rename it and move on since that’s what a majority of congress wants. They’ve been lying for 7 years and can’t BS their way out of it.

The Republicans could control 400 seats in the House and 90 seats in the Senate, and they would still allow the Democrats to call the shots.

But I get what Trump is saying here. Had he vetoed this bill, he would have lost and been humiliated and defeated in an override.

To the contrary, had he vetoed this bill he might well have won and defeated an attempt at override, kept his integrity, avoided humiliation which he is experiencing now, kept his conservative base, put the Rinos on notice that he intends to govern as he campaigned, forced both Rinos and Democrats to go on the record, and saved the balance of his presidency.

Instead he has shown the white feather, not just accepted but affirmatively endorsed a law which is contrary to virtually every promise he made as a candidate and which leaves him in a condition in September when he can do naught but sell us out again.

If he had in fact been defeated in an override of his veto after having taken his case to the country, exposed the contents of the bill to the people, exposed the waste and corruption, and give them hell in the style of Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan he would have at least survived to fight another day even if he were to lose the vote. He could have roused the country. He has forfeited that option now.

How can he now be heard exhorting us to make America great again? He has lost credibility among those in his base who actually believed his promises. That in a president can be a mortal wound.

Fake News. Trump can de-fund the ACA with an executive order, just as Obama used EO to fund it.

With the veto he also could have gotten more of what his supporters want.

Even a single item, a cut to planned parenthood, removal of the no funds to be used on the wall provision, etc... and he could have claimed victory just for moving the ball.
