You're not. But here's how you could become one if you really wanted to
Sigh. We dealt with this back in December, but Nicholas Kristof is not giving up. I think hes obsessed.
Obsessed with what? Well thats the truly bizarre thing. Liberal New York Times columnist Kristof (but I repeat myself) seems obsessed with Christianity, and wanting to be a part of it. Now normally youd think, great! Someone wants to become a Christian! Wonderful.
If you keep your eyes on Christ then you are a Christian. There is no special membership card.
It seems Kristoff has seen something in Christianity which attracts him, but he doesn't know what. He certainly he still clings to his ego, and his worldly opinions and desires are still in control. So he remains sad and conflicted.
(It was a typical douchy question made to help the Dems on the stage and embarrass the Republicans. Would they have asked the same panel of candidates what the favorite firearm is?)
I cringed because it was sort of cop-out by Bush and his answer diminishes the truth of Jesus Christ to the merely practical aspects of his life and teaching, like Thomas Jefferson's much redacted "bible."
There are any number of churches here in Eugene Oregon that would be glad to validate his concept of Christianity. For many institutions located here the object of church growth has now become to have the churchs website added to a persons favorites on Internet Explorer, along with Oprah, Dr. Phil and PBS. Attending such churches allows people like Nick to maintain cherished linkages to secular actions and concepts while sanctifying themselves by including Christianity lite within their lives.
Nick can be assured the church leadership here will at no point allow disruption of those linkages. He can take comfort in knowing he and congregation members will never undergo the stress of encountering the Lord Jesus Christ in all His majesty as Job and Moses did in the Old Testament, or as Paul, Peter, James, and John did in the New Testament. At no point will these pastors plead that sin eternally separates a person from the Lord God or that Satan exists or that Jesus offers only path to the Kingdom of Heaven.
We left a church we had attended for 35 years when the pastor decided to join the popular elites of our city.
I find it difficult to believe he cannot find a similar comforting home where he lives.
By the way Oratam, I agree. Christ is God. Guys like C. S. Lewis were philosophers.
“What about someone like me whose faith is in the Sermon on the Mount, who aspires to follow Jesus teachings, but is skeptical that he was born of a virgin, walked on water, multiplied loaves and fishes or had a physical resurrection? Am I a Christian, President Carter?”
What about someone like me who is skeptical of the whole “Jews need to be exterminated” and “Germans are the master race” stuff, but still likes the idea of the trains running on time. Am I a Nazi?
