His understanding of a Welfare system, that could actually work, demonstrates the clarity of his vision--very, very different than that of those to whom you compare him:

I like Jefferson, too, he was one of the greatest thinkers of American history. I am just pointing out that his lofty ideals sometimes failed when it came time for him to be impacted by them. Jefferson wrote on several occasions about how slavery needed to be abolished, yet couldn’t bring himself to not practice it. Washington was not so conflicted. They were both men of their times, carrying on a practice that the British started. It does not, to me, detract from their character or greatness that they had slaves. Everyone in their era was deferring a resolution.
