McConnell promises in no uncertain terms: 'We're going to confirm Judge Gorsuch this week'

Roasts Schumer's hypocrisy

I know, I know. Most conservatives place about as much faith in Mitch McConnell as they place in the healing benefits of copper bracelets. However, his promise - made on Fox News Sunday - is about as unconditional as it gets. Gorsuch, he claims, will be confirmed. ...And he’ll be confirmed by the end of this week.

Nothing’s certain when the Dems are 100% lockstep and the GOP majority hinges on McCain, Graham, and Susan Collins.

This ball less wonder McConnell can fold like a cheap Coleman tent in an instant.

Assume nothing.

I'm afraid that what McConnell sees as the best case is really the worst case.

I can see McConnell trading away the nuclear option as a promise to not go nuclear next time in exchange for a confirmation now.

He would be maintaining the status quo, which keeps Republicans weak.

You people are nuts. I expect apologies for slandering McConnell once Gorsuch is appointed.

Most of the “conservatives” around here have no faith in ANYONE.

If McConnell goes nuclear on Gorsuch, all Trump’s nominees to SCOTUS WILL be confirmed.

My sister swears by copper bracelets, and she’s in a position to know.

Myself, I have no faith in them, but I mocked Fish oil omega 3 until I tried it. It has helped my joints.

They have not even decided on the cases that will be reviewed so the docket has not been established. He will be confirmed in time.

Suppose Kennedy, the ‘swing vote” is the next to go. What kind of judge would you need to maintain the ‘balance”?

Answer, a liberal one.

I am more than happy to be wrong about this.

The question is not whether Gorsuch is confirmed, it is whether McConnell and Schumer make an 11th hour deal and the filibuster remains intact afterwards.

It wouldn't matter who's next. Ginsberg is 84, Kennedy is 80, Beyer is 78. All of them are flips.

I don't think McConnell's ultimate goal is to maintain the balance. I think, in this immediate deal with Schumer, the perceived win-win is for Schumer to stop the filibuster of Gorsuch for the promise that McConnell doesn't go nuclear next time.

I posted elsewhere that McConnell is probably betting that the next SCOTUS nomination will come after the 2018 mid-term election, where the make-up of the Senate will be different because Democrats have to defend 12 seats in Republican-won states. Therefore, he's only focused on this confirmation now, thinking that a promise in the future will become mooted by events.

That’s a good point, and there may be no changes until 2019 anyway, which is not but two years off.

No judge with a strong political bent who is unable to put it aside and abide by the constitution should ever be confirmed.

If I were to be a devil's advocate against my own idea, I'd suggest that a decent Schumer play would be to get an Associate Justice to announce stepping down in early 2018 pending their replacement.

Once the SCOTUS seat comes into play, Schumer would then demand that Trump not fill the seat until after the 2018 mid-term election, to "let the people decide," and then campaign to protect the 12 Senate seats as a mandate on the Court.

We all know that it's different than in a presidential election year, because Trump gets to nominate anyway, no matter how the mid-term election goes. However, Schumer is in it for the optics and pressure, so he doesn't care about hypocrisy. Schumer would still create a crisis on the Court to rally the Democrat voter base to turn out to protect the Senate Democrats, and possibly throw out Senate Republicans too, to retake control in Trump's second two years.

They’ve had enough time.

Go nuclear, or go home.

Time to vote.
