Flashback: Freedom Caucus Poised To Back Ryan As Speaker

The Freedom Caucus is prepared to live with Paul Ryan, at least for now.

In an abrupt reversal after weeks of veiled threats that they might try to take him out, the group of 40 staunch conservatives now appears almost certain to get behind the speaker for another term.

The group's shift, ironically, comes as Ryan is perhaps most vulnerable. After Ryan criticized and kept his distance from Trump for much of the campaign, the president-elect could easily summon the votes to boot Ryan from the speakership.

That was when I began to question whether “Freedom Caucus” wasn’t an accurate representation of their actual ideology. I guess President Trump has found out for sure.

And Ryan and RINOs decide to turn on them despite the goodwill gesture, calling them Area 51 caucus and threatening to work against their re-election.

The Ryan support is actually a perfect example of the FC being reasonable and willing to compromise. There was no other choice. No other candidate could have gotten a majority. They backed Ryan in good faith that he would represent their interests.

It would appear Ryan has renigged, although he has a new opportunity for a do over to put forth a worthwhile bill.

That's why the OP included the word Flashback in the title.

Was there no conservative alternative?

Yeah, there was and is: Marsha Blackburn or Dave Brat.

You left out the meat of the article. Wonder why that was? Oh yeah, you hate the HFC. So as a public service, I'll post more--they decided not to torpedo Ryan because TRUMP wanted to give him a chance. Form the same article:

"The group's shift, ironically, comes as Ryan is perhaps most vulnerable. After Ryan criticized and kept his distance from Trump for much of the campaign, the president-elect could easily summon the votes to boot Ryan from the speakership. In fact, several House Republicans told POLITICO over the past 48 hours that if Trump calls for Ryan to step aside, they would feel pressured to vote against him — namely because their constituents overwhelmingly voted for Trump.

But Trump so far has signaled a willingness to forgive. The president-elect was cheerful and complimentary as Ryan showed him around the Capitol on Thursday.

Should that change, Freedom Caucus insiders said their intention to lay down their arms against GOP leadership will as well...."

They decided to hold their fire, and give Ryan one more chance with Trump's blessing. So quit lying.
