To suggest that a sovereign nation should be free to determine its own future was the rallying cry of the Brexiteers, the thought (and fact) of a countrys destiny being decided by outsiders who have no care nor affinity for it was enough to tip the balance and win the EU referendum for the Leave camp. But the calls for independence from Scotland are not this, and as much as the media and the SNP (Scots National Party) would like to conflate the two, the parallels just dont exist. Scotlands First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, does not want a free, independent Scotland, she just wants to be away from the English whom she detests.
In 2014, Scotland went to the polls to vote on whether or not to remain part of the United Kingdom, the result was 55.3% to remain. Since the Brexit vote, Sturgeons government in the Scottish Parliament has renewed calls for another referendum, saying that Scotland wants to be part of the European Union. To suggest that joining the EU is independence is a willful lie. The EUs stated aims are to deconstruct nation states and have pooled sovereignty. How is this independence?

I never knew English was a race.
I thought they were Anglo Saxon or Celtic.
It’s not racism you’re right (this is just another misuse of the term). But the overall point of this editorial is correct I believe the push to divorce Scotland from the U.K. isn’t about independence. If it were the Scots pushing the idea would be pushing for actual independence not a “desire” to remain in the EU.
Very conflicted. Seems that getting out of the UK would be considered independence, but getting into the EU would be subjugation to the European socialists.
If the Scots were actually becoming independent, that would be good news. But they are merely looking to shift their dependency from the United Kingdom to the EU, and still be slavishly devoted to the paternalistic central government somewhere.
Whatever happened to the good old rugged individualism that was an historic hallmark of the Scots spirit, forged in wresting a spare living from a hard and unforgiving land, and tempered as soldiers of fortune and of explorers of distant and strange lands?
I guess all the ones with testicular fortitude either emigrated, or were killed off as heroes is distant battles.
****Scotlands First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, does not want a free, independent Scotland, she just wants to be away from the English whom she detests.*****
She clearly doesn’t get out much. The Irish, English, Scots and Welsh are well disbursed throughout the Isles and have been for centuries. The surnames used throughout will attest to this.
Her attitude will just promote separatism which until now has always been a friendly “ancestry.com” sharing.
I really hate it that journalists can’t tell the difference between “racism” and “bigotry.”
IN any case, Brits are no more a different race from Scots than they are from Germans or Americans.
Different culture, yes.
Her campaign, such as it is, is based purely on emotionalism, not even the nationalism of historical differences or even the nationalism of the very recent independence referendum.
She continually dodges a basic question: if UK government expenditure (with revenue derived from all regions of the union) is responsible for 70% of the Scottish economy due to an insanely large bureaucratic state then what does she imagine or propose will replace that expenditure after independence? North Sea oil won’t do the trick by itself.
Independence for England!!!
It's an ethnicity, every bit as legitimate as the ethnicity of the Irish, Armenians, Azeris, or Koreans.
Scotland—outside of petroleum from the North Sea—doesn’t have a viable enough economy to stand on its own. Raising sheep and making hard liquor won’t come close to what happens when the UK government leaves the country.
“Raising sheep and making hard liquor wont come close to what happens when the UK government leaves the country.”
If they can drink enough Scotch and shag enough sheep, maybe they won’t care.
Moving right along...
That was King Edward I’s reaction when he heard about William Wallace’s uprising: “What a racist!”
So what if the article is right? If I were a Scotsman I’d probably hate the English too. That’s what happens when you subjugate your neighbors under your bootheels for centuries.
English is not a race
Look my ancestors are English and they shot English soldiers in Massachusetts in 1777..... so I get independence from the British / English but don’t try to say your Independence is about racism
I thought their biggest industry was collecting welfare from English taxpayers. Normally I am in favor of seccession as a matter of principle, but there’s really nothing in it for Scots.
