Fracking Ban Passes House With Veto Proof Majority (Maryland)

The House of Delegates has approved a bill to permanently ban natural gas fracking in Western Maryland.

The bill passed by a vote of 97-40.

The 97 votes is 12 more than the minimum of 85 needed to override a veto from Governor Larry Hogan.

That majority was important to the chairman of the committee hearing the bill in the Senate.

The chairman of the Senate Education Health and Environmental Affairs Committee, Joan Carter Conway of Baltimore City, says she won’t bring the bill to the Senate floor unless lawmakers have enough votes to override a possible veto from Governor Hogan.

On Wednesday, Carter Conway told WBAL NewsRadio 1090 that she still supports the ban, but she believes there are not the minimum number of 29 votes in the Senate to override a possible veto.

Hogan has not said if he will veto the ban, but earlier this week Secretary of the Environment Ben Grumbles told WBAL NewsRadio 1090 that "rigorous regulations" would be in place if fracking were ever to be allowed in the state.

“Pennsylvania will be happy to sell them natural gas.”

Reminds me of a Monty Python quote, which I will not post here.

Connection to the national power grid is a privilege.
If Maryland does not wish to be part of the United States’ energy infrastructure it may (of course) withdraw.

If Maryland doesn’t want the gas, fine. Shut off the pipelines and let them heat and cook with cow turds.

I hope someone in the southwest corner of PA does a little horizontal drilling and poaches gas from accross the M-D Line in Maryland. Why let it go to waste?

Western MD is so narrow in some spots one could drill from PA to WVa.

How can laws be ‘permanent’?

NIMBY, but they’ll gladly purchase it from states that allow it. Kind of like the wind farms off of Hyannis. They’re good for you thee, but not for me (Teddy Kennedy).
