When Omarosa Manigault, the former Celebrity Apprentice antihero-turned-White House adviser, needs to talk to President Donald Trump, she simply strolls into the Oval Office.
As assistant to the President and director of communications for the office of public liaison, Manigault enjoys what Trump aides refer to as walk-in privileges meaning she doesnt need an appointment or permission to pop her head in and consult with the leader of the free world.
Her level of easy access marks a break from the previous administration, where President Barack Obama and his gatekeeper chiefs of staff kept at bay the number of aides, even senior officials, who simply walked in without an appointment. In contrast, Trump may have set up the most accessible Oval Office in modern history.
Along with Manigault, White House officials say, the list of aides with walk-in privileges includes chief strategist Steve Bannon, senior policy adviser Stephen Miller, chief of staff Reince Priebus, son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, and counselor Kellyanne Conway.
White House Counsel Don McGahn has walk-in rights, as does senior communications aide Hope Hicks, and Keith Schiller, Trumps longtime private security aide who followed him to the White House. Trumps new national security adviser, Gen. H.R. McMaster, is also expected to be added to the informal list, according to a White House official.

But he’s a racist!!!!!
And a misogynist. Don’t forget misogynist.
Trump practices transparency......
....Obama only used it as a campaign slogan
Wow, maybe he actually wants to know what’s going on, actually wants to get things done instead of hiding out, playing king.
Oh that’s right...and she is a Baptist minister, so that proves he is an Anti-Semite and islamophobe too.
Trump has somewhat clipped the wings of his Chief of Staff with this policy. Interesting. And smart, why allow one person to dominate what you get to hear?
Anti-semite - the Trump smear du jour
That’s the way it generally works in corporate New York.
The rest, in general, go through myself or my counterparts, or his secretary - who jealously protects his time because there are hundreds of people who would love a chunk of it; I imagine for Trump it's 1000x worse.
As for "open-door", unscheduled pop-ins..... They're fine. He welcomes them. But, I'd better not be coming in to make small talk about the weather. "This thing is happening. It's gonna affect the entire company. You oughta know.", approximately, is a worthwhile topic. I imagine that Pres. Trump is much the same. Omarosa, etc likely is not coming in to discuss the latest betting line at the track.
What's funny is that my boss would be equally as welcoming of the rank-and-file, but ya just can't have 200 people a day dropping in at any time to chat; you'd never accomplish a thing.
Exactly right. However by all accounts in the past you could walk into the Chief of Staff's office and say that, and he would decide if the President needed to know it. If you were on CoS bad-list, maybe you didn't get in. Or if he didn't fully comprehend the magnitude of an item and didn't think it worthy of the President's time. Whatever.
It's smart to have a small inner circle that can all get in and bring you urgent business directly, not just one guy. Key is keep that circle small, empower them to speak freely, make sure they don't abuse the priveledge with time wasters or they get pruned out of that inner circle. Hopefully that keeps you from settling into a bubble.
