LEDERER and JENNIFER PELTZNEW YORK (AP) -- Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, a veteran diplomat known as a potent and personable voice for his country's interests as he sparred with his Western counterparts, died suddenly after falling ill Monday in his office at the mission. Vitaly Churkin, 64, was taken to a hospital in New York, where he died, Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador, Vladimir Safronkov, told The Associated Press. Vitaly Churkin was 64. Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador, Vladimir Safronkov, told The Associated Press that Churkin became ill in his office at Russia's U.N. mission and was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he died Monday. His cause of death wasn't immediately known. Churkin has been Russia's envoy at the United Nations for a little over a decade and was considered Moscow's great champion at the U.N. |
Yes, thank you, Mark. While my eyes skipped over that important information in the Wikileaks release the first time I read it, when I did see it, I thought that the McCain contribution request was only important because of Churkin’s detailed reply.
