So we fight to raise the minimum wage companies come out with more automation. Am I missing a trend here?

The Left demanded $15 an hour for minimum wage. Now the jobs go away and automation takes their place.
Along very similar lines — the Left has been calling Trump an illegitimate president, and they have been complaining about the “hacked election”.
Watch as Trump forces election reform, including Voter IDs.

I see the $15/hour minimum wage has made its way to Boston.

Stupid people demand stupid things and get them.
Now they're unemployed.

Free? I read that article and didn’t see anything about limits to how many you can get. What about bums pouring in for free sandwiches?
They’ll make money on people buying fries and soda at the counter but wouldn’t they need literally hundreds or more big macs coming out of the machine if they’re free?
I’m sure a FReeper smarter than me will explain. And don’t take being smarter than me as much of an achievement :)

Excellent point. After it becomes clear they will lose the jobs battle, the Left will shift tactics and demand vastly cheaper, or even free, food thanks to automation.

They certainly anticipate that. I believe that you have to have an ATM card for this to work. The worst off bums don't have one of those. This is a limited time offer, and limited to one restaurant. They are getting off MUCH better in terms of cost versus positive media exposure than Denny's, who offered an entire free meal nationwide in a Super Bowl ad.
Besides the drinks and fries, a LOT of people who hadn't evn THOUGHT about McDonald's in a long time might get in the habit when "The first hit's free, kid."

They are definitely bugging about his call for voter fraud investigation. They keep saying there isn’t any and you can’t prove it. If that is true why are they so freaked out? I’ll tell you why, they are scared to death he will prove it.
I’m gonna get fat(er)eating all this popcorn! lol

I think it’s a marketing test. They want you to try a free sandwich (or more than one) just so that you can know that a hamburger from a machine is a good product. Once people believe that, then the company can charge you for it.
Note that I make no claim that their food is ever “good”. I just think that they realize most folks won’t trust the machine and will be reluctant to sample the new method. But if it starts off as free ...

Wawa convenience stores have had self serve order kiosks for ten or fifteen years. They allow Wawa to staff the deli counter with non English speakers.
Rumor has it the sandwich makers are on notice — the robots are coming.
Wawa makes tons of money on gas and cigarettes. I don’t know if their deli is profitable or a loss leader.

I know I’m a bad person, but I bought a “Grand Mac” yesterday. I rarely eat McDonalds, but on occasion I crave a Big Mac. My guilt is worth every bite.

I’m surprised they’re not lobbying mayors and city counsels to ban machines.
I know/think that would be impossible. Right? lol

15 dollars. They’re still paying specialized graphics folk in manhattan 30 to 35 an hour. The best get 45.
I worked on some of those investment banking centers. you REALLY have to know your stuff and be fast and very professional.
Thats’ worth only TWO TIMES what a person at McD’s does.
Market dictated wages would put McD’s workers at 7 bucks an hour.

I was in Europe last summer. All the McDonald’s we went to had touch screen ordering systems. You ordered and paid by machine, then picked up your order as the number was called.
They were all much more upscale than the ones in the U.S. and featured a specialty coffee and dessert counter.

Also from the article;
"The chain is replacing cashiers and other low-skilled jobs with computers and automated machines because, as Wendys president Todd Penegor told Investors Business Daily, it has to compensate for wage hikes." Wages are the price of labor. But there is a balance. For a business to survive and thrive wages must be low enough to permit a profit. In the fast food business, rising entry level job wages are pricing people out of the jobs and machines in.
