Herbal And Dietary Supplements—Buyer Beware
Canada Free Press ^ | 01/19/17 | Jack Dini

Of the fifty-one thousand products introduced since 1994, only 170 (0.3 percent) have any documentation of their safety

Americans spend more than $32 billion a year on more than 85,000 different combinations of vitamins, minerals, botanicals, amino acids, probiotics, and other supplement ingredients. 1

While it costs millions of dollars to develop and substantiate a pharmaceutical product, selling supplements requires no such investment. And new products are easily sold as supplements. The only common feature among them, as defined by the FDA, is that these are edible things not intended to treat, diagnose, prevent or cure diseases. However, this is why people take them. 2

Where are all the corpses stacked???

Vioxx corpses alone outnumber anything in the supplement world.

If it doesn’t have bacon in it, I won’t use it.

Another “please please PLEASE give us MORE POWER” propaganda piece on behalf of the FDA.

I know a bunch of people who are into essential oils and state that they emit frequencies that harmonize with certain frequencies in the human body and can cure stuff.

Interesting that none of these people have had their afflictions corrected with the essential oils that they claim are helping.

Of course the *helping* is so gradual, that it could just be natural healing that the body is doing instead.

On most of this stuff, it is pretty easy to make your own.

Glucosamine solved my 2 years worth of extremely painful sciatica within 2 days. I ditched ibuprofen as a result, and I feel better.

Glucosamine was proved in a double-blind, placebo controlled, multi-country study to be more effective than ibuprofen.

Some essential oils are demonstrably beneficial, and some are new age woo-woo nonsense. This can be determined via web search. For instance, Oil of Oregano is a powerful antimicrobial.

There’s a huge supplements industry in UT. They have bough Orrin hatch which has kept herbal supplements unregulated and free to make whatever BS claim they want.

Oil of oregano works on mrsa. It’s the only thing that worked on mrsa a friend had on his ankle.

The Feds tried to regulate supplements in the mid-90’s.

The response shattered all records for volumes of mail to Congress on any one topic.

Everyone has the right to be foolish, I just point and laugh at these fools, but I never want the government trying to “help them for their good” because that is tyranny and we have plenty of that already thank you very much.

I’d rather live in a world of snake oil salesmen than in a world filled with a bunch of “nagging nanny no-betters”.

I was around for the Vioxx debacle. If I remember correctly, the increased cardiovascular risk was found only in populations with either established CVD or risk factors placing them at high risk of CVD. In that group a significant number would have had an event with or without Vioxx. Plaintiff lawyers will attribute every CVD event to Vioxx and the defense lawyers will attribute every case to natural propensity. The real number is unknown and probably unknowable.

There are now multiple studies linking various vitamin supplements to various cancers. Using the logic of a plaintiff lawyer and the facts that almost every person in America has taken a vitamin supplement at some point in their life and that about 1/3 of Americans will get cancer, that there are 10s of millions of vitamin victims.

Biologically active chemicals are biologically active chemicals whether you get it at the pharmacy or GNC.

On a side note, when I developed cancer, I was advised to stop several supplements linked with decreased cancer survival.

MDs are put in place to act as peddlers of the Drug Industry products

That is their function.
