I have to admit that I am cringing even as I key this in, but there are some very good reasons why many in tech are actually welcoming the incoming administration of Donald Trump.
I spent the last few weeks talking to a range of Silicon Valley leaders, all of whom will only talk off the record, because, well, Trump.
All of them to a person were against him, some even voicing public opposition, during the campaign, and they all lent strong to tepid support to Hillary Clinton. That said, most indicated that they are seeing what they consider some promising signs from the new power structure in D.C.
I know, I know, I know. But I don't make the news I just type it over here on this keyboard.
And I have written a lot about why many in tech think the incoming president is very bad news for tech already, citing numerous reasons, many of which are actually scary, too.
Among them: A series of disturbing comments on immigration, all of which point to a xenophobic attitude against the very kind of hard-working and innovative people who built Silicon Valley; deeply entrenched misogyny that is at cross purposes to what tech purports to support (and never really does, but that's another story!); a tin ear to diversity, too, again still a weakness of tech; a president with a firm grip on Twitter, but a 1960s mentality on what tech is and is going to be; the possibility of a very damaging series of trade wars....

Code words for selling the American tech worker down the Ganges for cheap labor; selling the lie that there are no STEM qualified Americans when in fact there are.
In some HP (Hewlett-Patel) execs mind, thats all that matters, but in fact, having a better business environment will be good for all.
CNBC?
Heh, nice try.
There is always something to be said for a business that goes along with the current administration just to stay in business.
Some of the Silicon boys went way, way, way, way, over the line in supporting the current administration. Before they can be believed there needs to be some severe management changes before they can be trusted.
For example take ALGORE, please...
Good Lord! The people slogging across the Rio Grande are not headed for careers designing killer apps in Silicon Valley.
There’s immigration. And there’s illegal immigration. Don’t these weenies get that?
xenophobic attitude against hard-working and innovative people
deeply entrenched misogyny
a tin ear to diversity
possibility of a very damaging series of trade wars....
It's time to take the dictionary back and not allow these scum to define us.
He’s got ‘em by the antitrust shorthairs for the next 4 years. They’ll learn to get along with him, and like it.
3 of 4 Silicon Valley workers are foreigners. It is a communist slave camp. Tariff the area. Shut it down. It is of no value to US citizens. Let them find another foreign place.
The fourth one is either a purple-haired diversity candidate or was the one that sent the work offshore. Sometimes both.
Silicon Valley could slide into the ocean and we’d probably be better for it.
Trade deals are where intellectual property is protected, anti-counterfeiting ...
When those deals are re-negotiated, patent, copyright etc. are all on the table.
It’s not just Silicon Valley, I expect that Hollywood and the pharma industry will also discover unexpected merit in a Trump Presidency.
What a lame writer. Can’t just get to the point, has to spend the first few graphs justifying why he wrote the article. Idiot.
On what basis are the techies against him? Although Trump was arguably belligerent in expressing himself at times, the techies never made themselves clear about their fears about Trump imo, their fears possibly based on corrupt media demonization of Trump. Insights welcome.
Among them: A series of disturbing comments on immigration, ..."
With the help of Constitution-savvy patriots, Trump will hopefully rebuild the feds according to the feds constitutionally limited powers.
Using software development as an analogy, the techies are arguably complaining about immigration, for example, in the context of the previous, buggy software version which Trump will hopefully make obsolete anyway.
I have always disliked Swisher. I won’t even return her emails seeking a quote or an opinion off the recrod - they get twisted.
That written - our small firm welcomes Trump. We had some initial talks with some Fed agencies, and they have accelerated after the election. Here’s hoping it works out.
BTW, I keep seeing the 75% of the techies in Silicon Valley are foreign born, I’ve yet to see that myself. Although, when I was at one of huge firms in Silicon Valley - it did have a lot of people fro India. My last company easily had 85-90% Americans plus a bunch of Canucks and that’s with about 400 employees. My current company is all American - all 11 of us. :)
Oh, they get it, they just hope the readers of their screeds don't.
Total bullsh*t. Nothing but lies the libs have told themselves.
Trump has the most diverse cabinet picks to date. Not even Obama had such a cabinet. Obama had a bunch of rich white people.
The petty little mook just HAD to get a cut in against gun owners. Thanks for the reminder of why I stopped reading CNBC.
What I got out of the article was a little different. Basically, the tech companies are a kind of Corporate Snowflake, who have a difficult time separating their emotional / political stance from business reality.
But some of them are waking up to realize, Gee, maybe a business guy in the White House will actually be good for, you know, BUSINESS.
Ya think?
Nice.
