At the very least, get a couple of lowers for $80 each. Build as budget allows.
Go cheap and get 2. You’ll never be sorry. They are all fun.
A viable alternative, go buy 3 mini-14’s. The whole family can go out Christmas day and wreak havok on your old TV’s, old dishes you can’t seem to throw out. Go to the Grocery Store and buy lot’s of cheap soda and out of date mellons and other produce.
Fun for the whole family.
Merry Christmas to the whole family!!!
I believe that whichever AR you choose, it should be put through its paces for it to be trusted for self defense. A good carbine class will help with that along with regularly putting rounds through it. You will know if it is dependable after a while. If it isn’t, get another one.
I understand people are on budgets, so I don't get all snooty if someone wants a S&W or equivalent AR, because they aren't likely to push it really, really hard. The Colts are still the yardstick by which a fighting AR is measured (some people say they are the baseline). The DD stuff is pretty good, and they stand behind it. BCM offerings ditto, but - IMHO - not any better. LMT about the same. I haven't been around a new Noveske or Larue, but Knight's Armament are dandy, but they don't come cheap.
For coyote guns, show-and-tell shooters or paper/pop bottle plinkers, it doesn't matter because if it takes a crap at the wrong time, nobody is likely to die as a consequence.

I follow Wranglerstar, he likes guns, but is not a gun guy. He demonstrates tools mostly on his videos. That video was a tool review not an advertisemen,t just a demonstrations of a tool he really likes. Take it for what it is.
He has one of the better channels on Youtube and his older videos are classics. His construction of a water hammer pump is great information for preppers and just plain interesting.
I know I didn’t cause I bought a FN SCAR 17 instead.
Colt CAR15 LE green label (no doubt in my mind). If I had to chose one in survival mode, this would be it.
As long as the pointy objects come out the front end when you pull the trigger then you are good to go.
My lower was mis-shipped... Should have been done TODAY, but Christmas will wait a week
My friends have put 10’s of thousands of rounds down range in Bushmasters.
Not one single misfire. Ever.
Rock River. Best stock trigger available. Period.

Wranglerstar has a pretty decent YouTube channel:

It’s worth a look.
I have a Smith & Wesson MP-15. I also have a YHM with a Tactical Solutions AR-22 upper. And I have a Century Arms AR-15 that is surprisingly accurate and reliable.
