Honestly, I think that once a sentence is ended such as 36 months prison, etc. That all your rights should be restored. I don’t think we should be forcing people into therapy, or rehab, or any compelled “treatment.”
However, with that said I think “some” crimes should have lifetime bans. Such as murder, assault with a deadly weapon, rape, etc. But lesser crimes like “Armed Robbery” should have a stipulation that you keep your gun rights, but if you are convicted of any other crime then you lose it for life.
The question is loaded. If you’re a violent criminal you’re going to use guns regardless of not being allowed to.
But I think that some crimes go so far that the government has a duty to do whatever they think they can do to make law abiding citizens feel “safer.”
Because that’s all “felon in possession of a firearm” crimes do, is make people feel safe. Hardcore felons don’t GAF, and will use and carry weapons. One time felons who will never commit another felony and learned their lesson may want to own firearms, but they can’t, so they don’t. I think it does more harm than good. But in some circumstances it’s a no-brainer....I think. I’m completely open to discussion about felons and 2nd amendment rights and I’m on the fence but leaning in the “It’s a right not a privilege” camp and once your sentence is up your rights are fully restored. None of this punishing you for life BS. All that does is builds a big economy around keeping people in the system and not really rehabilitating anyone. Which is what the criminal justice system is today. A complete and utter joke.
i think if you commit a gun crime no more guns for you. they have proven they cant be trusted with one. since we dont actually execute people anymore and hence, cannot deal with them question of them ever being armed again in that way, i say since they still get to breathe and be around civilized folks, that is the rest of their lifetime cost they pay to protect the rest of society from them.
Great post.
I am counting on Trump to override @@@holes like cuomo and give ME MY RIGHT to by a gun!!
IT’S NOT a state issue. It’s an amendment.
And you’re right. A guy who used a gun, if he’s a career criminal, he’s gonna get another gun.
Guns are illegal except for business owners out here on Staten Island (lots of neighbors have businesses, which is a LITTLE comforting but not much if robbers break into my house!).
I know 5 places I can drive to in 10 minutes to buy a gun and the cops know them too. Arrest them and there’s thousands more to take their place.
