Trump will quit TPP in first days (and maybe NAFTA too)
POLITICO ^ | 11/11/2016 | Adam Behsudi

President-elect Donald Trump plans to move quickly to fulfill some of his most controversial campaign promises related to what he derided as “job-killing” trade policies, according to an internal transition team document shared with POLITICO.

Within the first 100 days, his administration will drop out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and 100 days after that it could withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement unless certain demands are met, according to the described policy road map.

TPP never actually took effect.

That’s what I thought. It’s in some ratification phase and some people suggest that it’ll never pass through all the players.

On NAFTA, I think he’ll give Mexico one single chance to pay mostly on this wall construction, and give up three or four advantages. If they say no....it goes totally down the tube.

The hurt I think for jobs lost....is the China connection and ease of entry for their products.

I saw a little bit of the news this morning. The media is just making things up.

Schumer announced yesterday that TPP is dead....for the reasons that Trump has been saying right along. They're NOT dealing with a dummy.

TPP never actually took effect.

But it still lurks - it needs to be stepped on for good.

And I saw a thread title that Canada & Mexico have signaled that they were open to renegotiating NAFTA.

BO, don’t expect Politico to refer to facts in their articles. Why do you want them to stick to the facts anyway?

You are correct. Trump has already spoken to the leaders of those countries. Trudeau was certainly receptive to change in NAFTA. Mexico....all they care about is “American money”. Somethings don’t change. Make them adhere to USA environmental and workplace standards and see what happens.

NAFTA has an opt out clause. Any signatory can quit after suitable notice, six months I think.

So, Trump gives notice and the treaty gets renegotiated.

Canada and the US have some minor trade issues but nothing that can't be worked out quickly and easily. The beef here is with Mexico.

Mexico's problem is that it has virtually no leverage in these negotiations. Trump will get everything he wants including payment for the wall.

Talking about Mexico is fine. But Trump’s REAL opponents in bringing about FAIR trade will be the U.S. Corporations who want to cheap overseas labor and free access to U.S. consumer markets, all the while putting Americans out of work.

Mexico's President used the word "modernize," which lets everybody save face.

Chuckie Schumer told the Dems yesterday that TPP is DOA.

Canada and Mexico are already offering to re-negotiate.

Not bad for 48 hours as POTUS elect.

I guess we’re going to withdraw from TPP NEGOTIATIONS, anyway.

Either way, it’s less of a big deal than either side is making of it. It wasn’t going to make much difference in US growth, even for the optimists. It would have been a big positive for the Philippines, Vietnam and S.Korea, and helped them compete with China, but that advantage was geopolitical for the US. Economically it is no more than a small loss.

Absolutely! Trump has been correct all along. We are not “equal” partners, the US has the leverage and he will see we get a fair deal from every one in the world that wants their piece of our prosperity.......

Sure, as long as it's not your job on the chopping block.
