The popular vote totals are tainted with potentially hundreds of thousands of fraudulent votes which are flowing into our election process

IMO this is the most important reason for the Electoral College. No matter how many fraudulent votes a corrupt state accepts, the damage to the whole system is limited to corrupting just their own electors.
