Yet many say that pistols are not a viable defense.
Where are all the examples of bear attacks where a pistol was not sufficient for defense?
My research also bears this out that handgun employed and used before the bear is on you seem to be effective.
Even after you are being mauled they are still useful in stopping further damage.
I would think all that is necessary would be as folks in Alaska. The survivors know what works.
Missing this one. .45 stops grizzly bear in Denali Park.
Ping.
I've always heard of the expression "If you're going to carry a handgun for defense against brown bears, be sure to file the front sight off..."
Now it comes to light, or seems to anyway, that people are using .44 magnum, .357, 10mm, .45 auto, and even 9mm successfully as bear defense.
In the very event that I find myself in bear country, I suppose I'll be packing a handgun of some kind. But not a 9mm... (who was it who figured THAT out, anyway?) and no bear spray.
Large magnum revolvers repel idiots...
At close range I cannot think of anything a 357 can’t stop in North America.
bump
Bear ate 'em, then buried the pistol, so, no evidence.
Always, always, always: guns will be “shown” in these “studies” to “not be effective.” It’s political and cultural, not factual.
I’ve been living in SE Alaska for a few years now. On this island we have both blacks and Alaskan Coastal Brown Bears. “Brownies” are the same species as Grizzlies, but larger because of their diet, or so I’ve heard.
Local’s will tell you that either a .45-70 lever action rifle or 12ga slug gun are the best choices for bear defense and that you absolutely need to carry something while hiking the trails outside of town. Nevertheless, a lot of people carry big revolvers as a matter of convenience, and I have heard of bears being dispatched with lesser calibers, even 9mm.
Just wanted to share Beau's 534# Black Bear that he got a few weeks ago in northern Wisconsin. He uses some sort of hand 'canon' that I can't even LIFT! This is his 3rd Black Bear in 30 years; this one is in the middle, one bigger, one smaller.
Bill Frady mentioned this on his Lock And Load radio show a few days ago.
I was all giddy that Bill mentioned FR.
