Yet many say that pistols are not a viable defense.
Where are all the examples of bear attacks where a pistol was not sufficient for defense?
My research also bears this out that handgun employed and used before the bear is on you seem to be effective.
Even after you are being mauled they are still useful in stopping further damage.
I would think all that is necessary would be as folks in Alaska. The survivors know what works.
Missing this one. .45 stops grizzly bear in Denali Park.
Ping.
Concur. When my dad worked pipeline right-of-way on the Trans-Alaska pipeline, ALL of the workers carried .45's or .44's.
I've always heard of the expression "If you're going to carry a handgun for defense against brown bears, be sure to file the front sight off..."
Now it comes to light, or seems to anyway, that people are using .44 magnum, .357, 10mm, .45 auto, and even 9mm successfully as bear defense.
In the very event that I find myself in bear country, I suppose I'll be packing a handgun of some kind. But not a 9mm... (who was it who figured THAT out, anyway?) and no bear spray.
A powerful handguns is the better choice for grizzly/brown bears. But most black bear attacks are predatory in nature. In those, the bear often tries to figure out if the prey is dangerous, giving opportunities for an effective defense with even a .22 pistol.
I would recommend at least a 9mm, but any pistol is likely better than no pistol.
Large magnum revolvers repel idiots...
When you use pepper spray you just season yourself for the bear.
Years ago, I ran a string of Plott Hounds and did a lot of bear hunting...I’ve harvested 5 black bear in Tennessee with a Ruger Blackhawk .44 Mag...Several more in Canada and Tennessee with a .35 cal Marlin lever action...
At close range I cannot think of anything a 357 can’t stop in North America.
Mr. GG2 lived in AK for a short time. He carried a .454 Casual everywhere.

Props to Mr. GG2 for casual carry of .454 Casull. Bears, tread lightly.

.454 Casull, .480 Ruger, .475 Linebaugh, .460 S&W and .500 S&W is what you need when dealing with large Grizzlies. (a 44 will worThey are very heavily muscled and have lots of fat which makes smaller caliber guns less effective because the tissue absorbs the round.
You also need a gun that you are willing to actually carry day in and day out.
That 500 mag won’t do you any good if you left it in the truck.
Spelling thanks to autospell in my tablet. :-)
“a 44 will worThey “
Beg to differ. Speer makes the 270 DeepCurl for the specific purpose of a 44mag being used against bears.
Yes I would not trust less than a .44 magnum on bears.
