Today is V-J Day, the anniversary of the date in 1945 of the formal Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. For practical purposes, it ended on August 14 (August 15 in Japan, on the other side of the International Date Line), when President Truman announced the capitulation of Japan and the end of World War II in the Pacific, unleashing a paroxysm of jubilation throughout the victorious nations. The war in Europe had ended with the German surrender on May 8th, but Japan fought on in the Pacific and had only lost Okinawa, the last stepping stone toward the homeland, in mid-June, after a fanatical defense that cost enormous U.S. casualties. The invasion of Kyushu planned for October 1945 was expected to incur losses in the millions, and this factor figured significantly in the decision to use atomic bombs against Hiroshima and Nagasaki (on August 6 and 9, respectively).
The nuclear threat and the belated entry of the Soviet Union into the war against Japan (on August 9) tipped the balance between fiercely contending proponents of surrender and those in favor of continuing the war - despite an unsuccessful palace coup by the latter. And thus ended World War II after six years.

~ Harry S Truman (1884-1972) (proclaiming V-J Day, 2 September 1945)
Unlike many on this board, I remember it well. We rushed into the streets and cheered and suddenly we knew that our lives wold be different. None of us however, expected this America.
I might not be here if that invasion had taken place as my Dad was told that his outfit, 45th Inf.Div. Thunderbirds, would be part of the invasion after transferring from the ETO. Those who try to show that the use of the 'A Bombs' was unwise in deployment or using them at all will find no sympathy from me. The fanatic ISIS warrior had a close cousin in the Bushido Japanese and 'convincing' such a death-lovers takes a big sledge-hammer!
Why is the White Mosque (unvetted, BC unknown)
arming al Qaeda TODAY, Sept 2, 2016,
when al Qaeda BOMBED the USA on 911?
WHY?
Want to bet obama will go to a japanese temple on Oahu and apologize??
Rhode Island is the only state left that still recognizes VJ Day but as the last few WWII veterans leave us the holiday is getting less support. The hate America crowd would prefer to demonize this country for using the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki but neglect to take into account the barbaric actions of the Japanese that forced these actions in the first place.

My grandfather grew up in rural Missouri. He said that he and his brother were working in a field near the railroad tracks when a locomotive came through. There were several drunk railroads on it banging on the tender with a big hammer to get people’s attention and yelling “the wars over!” This was WWI.
Kaze reflected on MacArthur's speech in an interview used in the final episode of The Last Days of World War Two, about how gracious MacArthur was, and wondering if the roles had been reversed, how gracious the Japanese would have been.
Don’t tell Oprah it’s VJayJay Day!
If I was a full-term baby, I was a part of the VJ Day celebrations. I was born 9 months later.
Waiting for Obama to apologize once again to the Japanese for the cruel war we waged against them.
Oh, that has to do with Oprah? I thought that it was a cartoon of Bush 41 puking on the Japanese Prime Minister. THAT was funny (well, if you weren’t the PM, that is)!
“It’s V-J Day, the anniversary of the date of Japan’s surrender in 1945 and the end of WWII”
I can’t thank any of my relatives who took part, they’re all gone now. All that remains of them is their then-young children, who are now in their late 70s and early 80s. But thanks, again, to all that are still here. I salute you!
That explains why the six Blue Angels just flew by.
That crowd was around in the late '50s. One bunch went around the world, asking people if America was correct to use atom bombs on Japan.
When those who suffered Japanese occupation were asked, they responded, "Why did you drop only two?"
