Which cartridge do you use for long range hunting?

With the latest guns, scopes, and laser rangefinders, well-practiced hunters are able to confidently take game at over 1,000 yards.

If you are looking to break into the long range hunting arena, or are trying to improve your long range accuracy, listen to what the experts at Red Rock Precision Rifles feel are the best cartridges for long range hunting.

Shooters sensitive to recoil should choose a 28 Nosler and those looking for more power should choose a .300 Remington Ultra Mag. However, that’s just one man’s opinion.

If it's deer or deer-sized game you’re chasing, you can’t go wrong with the 6.5 Creedmoor, though tons of long range game animals have fallen to the good old .300 Winchester Magnum, and the new Weatherby 6.5-3000 is quickly making a name for itself. See the video here. What are you all using?

AND, the even more important question: WHO DECIDES?

When I'm hunting, I decide.

I don’t know of anyone who actually would take a 1000 yard shot on a deer. We have a 1000 yard range in this area and the ones who shoot there are only interested in killing paper.

400 yard shot’s are stunting not hunting, develop some hunting skills and move in closer.

1000 yards? The animal is a speck on the horizon.

Get our of your truck and close the distance to less than 200.

"Which instinctively raises the question, at what distance do you find the line that divides between ethical and unethical?"

An ethical sportsman should know if he is able to run 1000+ yards to overcome and dispatch a wounded game animal which is basically what's going to end up happening.

“”400 yard shot’s are stunting not hunting, develop some hunting skills and move in closer.””

That comment tells me you’ve never hunted West TX and probably never elk hunted in the mountains. I’m pretty sure your going to try and come back and tell me some BS story but I’ve done them all for damn near 60 years now and shoot rifle/caliber combo’s designed for that. But don’t let that stop you, the comment should be interesting.

Not only that, if it is a warm day and the game has been running with adrenaline levels high, the meat would be blood-shot and ruined by the time the hunter could get to it. I have seen hunters take a 300 yard shot across a small valley in the Cascades and it was several hours getting to the game.

Why, because the hunter had to go down the canyon and then up the other side. The country is very steep.

.308 Winchester. I think it has a flatter trajectory than the 30.06.

That’s not long range!
B-1B with a load of AGM-158s. Now THAT is long range.
