Hmm ... seems like John Derbyshire was declared a “very bad person” for offering some advice that relates to this situation.
It’s interesting what the “news” story left out. If you look at the Facebook link in the article, you’ll see that the gang of people who beat him were chanting “Black lives matter” as they were doing it.
I used to stop and help people, as well as pick up the occasional hitchhiker more often in the past. Anymore, as a rule, I don’t stop unless I’m carrying. But also anymore, I’m pretty much always carrying when I go out. Lots of crazy people out there, especially with so many meth users.
The old saying never stops being true: No good deed goes unpunished in the USA.
Alfred Hitchcock alerted Americans in the 1950s to beware of hitchhikers. It hasn’t gotten an better, and here we are, what, 36 tears without Hitch. The USA is in rapid decline.

There is no such thing as a “stranded” motorist or pedestrian anymore. Stop for no one. Call 911 and report the location of the “stranded” person.
This young man will die a lonely death because he has not developed a gift of fear. If he doesn’t have it at age 37, it’s not coming.
