MI: Chief Craig Hosts Gun Safety Event in Detroit

On July 11, 2016, the Detroit Police Department teamed up with the National Shooting Sports Association (NSSA) to promote gun safety in Detroit.  Chief Craig was in attendance.  The goal was to prevent accidents with guns, especially accidents involving children. From wxyz.com:

Detroit Police Chief James Craig will be joined by the National Shooting Sports Foundation later today where they'll be talking about firearm safety and proper storage and misuse of guns.

The goal here is to promote the safe use of any firearm and help the community by handing out gun locks and information.

Chief Craig has been at the forefront of urban police chiefs championing armed self defense for his city.  Detroit stands out as a city where urban violence has not spiked, as it has in Milwaukee, Chicago, and Baltimore.

It is important to keep small children from accessing loaded firearms.  Chief Craig is not pushing for firearms to be unavailable for self defense.  He is not pushing for mandatory storage laws, such as have been passed in San Francisco, and which were struck down in the Supreme Court with the Heller decision.

There is a fundamental difference between pushing a voluntary action for the purposes of safety, and mandating it as a matter of public policy.

A big city police chief pushing real gun safety with the NSSF. How refreshing.

Typical LIBTARD response. I’m not putting a lock on my gun for nobody.

I grew up with hunting guns around the house, so did my boys, not one incident of us touching them. We knew not to touch Dad’s guns or he’d wear your butt out. Same when my boys were growing up their dad would have wore their butts out if I didn’t. I was good at using a belt on those type offenses. Eldest found that out when he thought it was smart to dribble gas from the gas can when granddad was tilling and go get the torch sparker from the garage...I wailed his butt good. Never set another fire.

Now we are on Great Grands, who have more liberal parents, and have to store guns in gun safe when the great grands visit.

So... when you really, really need your firearm, it’s locked up tight.

That’s NOT the answer to firearms safety.

If you have little kids in the house, you need to keep the firearms under control, just like you control poisons.

The easiest way to do that is to keep the ammo separate from the firearm, except for those that are directly under your control for self defense.

Once kids are of an age where they can understand, then discipline can work.

For your primary nightstand gun, I agree. For the rest of the collection, especially in a household with small children, I have no objection to using BUT NOT MANDATING trigger locks or using a safe to secure firearms.

It should be noted that when Clinton pushed trigger locks and made them freely available through local police departments, all the ones that I picked up were made in China and had a Harbor Freight quality to them.

Clinton could have turned this program into a win for American workers, but no, Chinese workers got the job. There is a bit of hypocrisy here but you get the point.

Guess that’d work - especially with small kids.

But be sure to educate them early...

We are in agreement.

Another thing to consider. In the Urban centers, a lot of the people have no tradition of firearms training and handling.

They have to start from scratch.
