I thought the deal was that Manson did concoct it as a BS cover so that his followers would not catch on to the fact that the murders were simply revenge for Manson not being signed to a record deal by Doris Day's son Terry Melcher (Melcher used to live in one of the houses the Manson "Family" attacked).
